Don't you find it frustrating that whenever you are walking in your sneakers during winter, your feet will sink through the snow on the ground every time you move? If yes, you are not alone in that kind of situation.
Many people buy snow shoes to avoid having to wear damp pants and keep shoes dry. But what should you do if you cannot buy one? Well, you have to gather all of these materials first before making your own snow shoes.
- -a survival paracord
- -a pocket knife
- -3 smaller branches
- -2 larger branches that can easily be bended
Know the appropriate size for your snow shoes. A person who is 140 pounds will typically need snow shoes that are 21 inches long and 8 inches wide. Snow shoes that are 10 inches wide and 36 inches long are appropriate for a person who weighs more than 200 pounds.
Collect two larger bendable branches after cutting off the smaller branches on their sides. You will end up having straight larger branches when you cut the smaller branches. Make sure that the two larger branches have similar lengths by leveling them on the ground.
The smaller branches are needed to make crosspieces on each snow shoe. The frame of each snow shoe will be made out of the larger branches. The best trees that have flexible branches are the willows and the alders. If you cannot find bendable branches, warm them by a fire to make them more flexible.
Form a teardrop shape out of the larger branch by bending its ends together. The ends should form an "X" shape after that. Then tie a survival paracord around the middle of the "X" shape. You can wrap more survival paracord on that area until the ends of the larger branch are securely held in place.
Create three crosspieces out of the smaller branches. Place the first crosspiece two-thirds away from the bottom of the teardrop shape. Then place the other two crosspieces several inches below the first crosspiece. Those two crosspieces should be several inches apart.
Use a survival paracord to tie the three crosspieces to the teardrop shape. The crosspieces should support your weight when you walk.
Place the remaining smaller branches under and over the crosspieces by weaving them. They should form a crisscross pattern together with the crosspieces. Tie a survival paracord to those branches if they do not stay in place.
Make sure that you place the ball of your foot on the top crosspiece while you are wearing your boot.
Fasten your snow shoe to your boot by using a survival paracord. Tie one end of the survival paracord to the left side of the top crosspiece and loop the survival paracord through your bootlaces. This will ensure that your snow shoe will not fall off as you move. You can now proceed to making your second snow shoe.
When you have gathered the materials needed and when you have followed all of the ten steps, you do not have to spend more dollars just to buy snow shoes.
