A paracord can be classified into any of these three types: nylon paracord, sisal paracord, and cotton paracord.
So how can you tell which kind of paracord you should select if you are not an expert? Here is the secret: you do not need to be an expert to choose which one. All you have to do is know what features that you want to look for in a paracord.
Tensile strength
The tensile strength of a nylon paracord is contributed by the individual synthetic filaments that run through its entire length. This is what makes the nylon paracord ideal for pulling heavy load during anchoring, rescue operations, and towing.
A sisal paracord does not have high tensile strength because of its short natural fibers. You can determine this by feeling its fuzzy surface with your hands.
When you place a cotton paracord in areas with intense heat, its tensile strength will not be affected. But like the sisal paracord, it does not have a superior tensile strength because of its natural fibers' short length. This type of paracord is easier to grip in moist conditions.
Shock absorbency
A nylon paracord can go back to its original length when it is suddenly stretched with greater force. The amount of stretching that it can absorb will not affect its tensile strength. This is why the nylon paracord does not snap when stretching is applied to it.
Even though the sisal paracord is available in different diameters, it needs a larger diameter so that it will not break easily when it is being stretched.
A cotton paracord can break easily when it is pulled too much because of its softness.
Resistance to other elements
The nylon paracord can easily pass through winches and pulleys while maintaining its smooth surface. This smooth surface is the result of the paracord being able to resist abrasions. It can also withstand acids, oils, sunlight, alcohol, and formaldehyde. When it is in contact with water, it does not stiffen or freeze. Although it can absorb water, it can regain its full tensile strength when it becomes dry. The nylon paracord can also withstand temperatures up to 150 degrees Celsius without losing its tensile strength.
The natural filaments in a sisal paracord are water absorbent. This means that it will become stiff when frozen. It will also decay from being exposed to insects, mildews, and fungi. Its natural fibers will slowly break apart when it is being clawed by a cat or when it is exposed to abrasions.
A cotton paracord will kink and swell when it is placed in humid areas. This makes it prone to damage and mildew overtime.
Cost-effective
A nylon paracord is a synthetic rope that is strong even though it has a light weight. This means that it has a longer life expectancy than other ropes that are manufactured from natural fibers. The nylon paracord can also be used as a jump rope because it can be bought for a cheap price.
A sisal paracord is expensive if it does not last long. But there are some sisal paracords that are cheap because of their longer durability.
A cotton paracord is the least expensive because it has the lightest weight compared to the two paracords.
Are you ready to choose the right paracord? Then use this information that you have learned so that you can make the correct decision. Just consult with an expert if you still have difficulty selecting the appropriate one.
