We have to admit it: Some people have natural leadership ability. They simply have the charisma, effortless ability to influence other people, and the confidence to do so. Having natural leadership ability does not, however, automatically mean being an effective one. An aspiring leader is expected to have above average communication skills, motivational skills, risk taking personality, team building abilities, and vision and goal setting commitment. Leadership, effective leadership, requires more than innate abilities and gifts. While these are helpful, leadership training may be as important too in light of what's needed for effective leadership.
Through leadership training, one can learn about the challenges being faced by current leaders in the political, business, education, and all other sectors. We know that leaders are expected to be dynamic. Their skills, expertise and knowledge should be up-to-date with current situation of the organization and the environment where it operates. Experienced leaders can attest to the rapid changes that puts tremendous pressures to them. Listening to success stories of these leaders is priceless for aspiring ones.
In leadership training, one can learn about strategic planning, coalition building, and many other principles that modern leaders should follow. Strategic planning helps leaders in aligning actions with the organization's mission, vision, and strategic objectives. This helps one to effectively set priorities and allocate scarce resources to the right activities. This is critical because amidst strict competition, strategic planning will provide the very much needed competitive advantage. It enables the organization to be ahead of the competition and satisfy its specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound, and challenging (SMARTC) objectives. This part of the training emphasizes communication skills, risk taking personality, and vision and goal-setting commitment.
In leadership training, aspiring leaders can also learn about coalition building. A coalition is a group of organizations who agree to work toward common goals. In leadership training, leaders learn to build coalitions and to effectively maintain them. Forming a coalition and maintaining it requires directing the energies of the group toward the achievement of the previously identified goals. Some examples of these goals include:
- To influence or call for the development of a specific policy concerning a specific issue
- To advocate toward changing peoples' behavior towards a certain issue, group, or event (i.e. environment, their health, differently-abled individuals)
- To encourage people's participation in a specific event (i.e. election, alumni homecoming)
- To counter-act a policy that is found unfavorable for the group
This part of leadership training emphasizes team building abilities and motivational skills. In order to maintain a coalition's effectiveness in working toward the identified goals, the leader is expected to motivate its members and facilitate the group to really work as a team.
Learning, experiences, and inspiration that leadership training offers to its audience are priceless. From abstract principle to tangible practices, it can truly enhance aspiring leaders' talents and leadership skills that they already possess. Interacting with the experts is the first step toward becoming experts too. Through hands-on leadership training, an aspiring leader is bound to become not just a mediocre leader but an effective one.
