Leadership entails several essential skills for it to become effective: awareness, charisma, management, aggressiveness, humility, sensitivity and courage, among others. Perhaps the crux to leadership is the skill of vision. Without a vision, the task of leadership will lose meaning. If there is no destination, there will be no direction. As the role calls for an exploration of new possibilities, mediocrity and complacency have no place in leadership. Good leadership means articulating this vision very clearly. The clearer the vision is, the easier it will be to achieve it.
Learned, not innate
"I have a dream" were the words immortalized by Martin Luther King Jr. when he articulated the vision of a nation where every person is respected, regardless of race. This dream was what he dedicated his whole life to. These words embodied his visionary leadership. Becoming a visionary leader, contrary to what others claim, is learned. There is no genetic pattern associated with visionary leaders; it is training and hard work.
Visionary leadership starts with the self
Improving visionary leadership starts with asking yourself questions about your own life first. What is your goal in this life? What is your dream? Dig deep within and sincerely ask yourself these questions to discern your own vision of what you want to accomplish.
Dream board exercise
After answering the questions above, people find it useful to write these visions and place pictures of them in a dream board. Constantly repeating these to yourself will help you focus (this might be helpful if done at the beginning of the day).
Focus on the vision
As Henry Ford places it: "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal." Keep your eyes on the objectives of your advocacy efforts. Leadership should be directed there. The more focused you are, the easier it will be to achieve your goals. Some people do not achieve their goals because their energy is spread too thinly. All efforts (e.g. strategic planning and advocacy campaigns) should be directed toward the identified goal.
Explore new things
Coming up with new ways of doing things will remind you of the endless task of discovery. It will also help counter tendencies to become complacent. For example, a change of routine may make you more creative. Sometimes, strategic planning for advocacy efforts might not be as effective as expected. These situations call for leaders who are able to find creative ways of dealing with whatever situation they are faced with.
Visionary leadership does not stop with vision.
Leadership entails discipline and commitment in achieving these goals and advocacy efforts. Without action, vision will never be transformed into reality. Advocacy campaigns without strategic planning will probably fail. Again, there are obstacles, and these require discipline; focus on the vision.
Persist, persist,persist.
When you say you can't, then you can't. failure disheartens people. Fear of rejection is one of the reasons why some people do not persist. Again, being a visionary is about exploring possibilities. It doesn't mean that all possibilities will work. It takes courage to try them out. Leadership requires persistence despite hardships, challenges, and even failures.
