Some people would get stuck in a position of hopelessness and helplessness in the face of adversities. These people wait for someone to lead them out of their predicament. But no one is exempt from becoming a leader because everyone leads a life. There is no need to look for someone to take the position of a leader to push forward. Everyone has the seeds of leadership.
Leadership is about constantly seeking for the "more" in life. It is the power to move from possibility to reality. Further, as John Maxwell says, it is the ability to influence change. Achieving a goal, however, is never free from its roadblocks. Mentioned below are several exercises to help you overcome these roadblocks. There is emphasis is on the word "exercises" as becoming a good leader involves practicing good leadership consistently. It is a habit, not an act.
An Exercise of Awareness
Leadership is largely an exercise of awareness. If one is to lead people effectively, one must master oneself first. Mastering oneself means knowing one's tendencies, one's potentials, strengths and weaknesses. How can one move forward if one is not cognizant of where one stands? In moving a group forward, a leader also needs to be aware of his member's needs and capacities. Leadership as an exercise of awareness involves identifying the group's advocacy objectives and articulating them into a common vision.
An Exercise of Vision
One difference between management and leadership is that management deals with making current processes efficient, while leadership involves envisioning and exploring possibilities. If there is no vision, there is no effective leadership. Many of the known leaders in history are those who clearly painted what they wanted to happen. They had an advocacy objective to strive for, a direction to push forward to.
An Exercise of Discipline
Without mastery however, leadership will not translate to influence. If one is to be an effective leader, one should embody what one envisions. A leader should live out healthy habits if physical well-being is his cause. One must have the discipline of converting vision into action if his cause is to be successful.
An Exercise of Aggressiveness
Leadership is for those who take initiative and find ways to achieve the vision/goal. Without action, vision becomes mere daydreaming. Leadership is aggressiveness to constantly push, innovate and find better ways to do things.
An Exercise of Persistence
In striving for your goal, you will undoubtedly encounter failure repeatedly. But one quality of good leaders is that they stay strong and focused on their vision. The ability of rising when they fall and never giving up on their advocacy objectives is possessed by successful people. Again, effective leadership is not tested by a single act alone but a consistent show of excellence.
An Exercise of Humility
Finally, one cannot possibly know everything. You can gain a lot from humbling yourself and dealing with your own failures. Embrace opportunities to learn and explore new and better ways of doing things. Leadership involves recognizing that you lack something and having the determination to gain what you lack.me people would get stuck in a position of hopelessness and helplessness in the face of adversities.
