Lavender essential oils are popular oil for aromatherapy. It is extracted from the flowers of lavender which is abundant in Mediterranean, Southern Europe, Australia and the U.S. It is combined with soaps, perfumes, and fabric conditioners. The term lavender is derived from the Latin term "lavare" meaning "to wash."
There are researches that proves the soothing and calming effect of lavender. The scent provides a calming effect which results to stress and anxiety alleviation. It also relieves headache when directly inhaled or massaged to the skin. It is also used to ease cough and respiratory ailments.
Some researches show that lavender essential oils have antiseptic and pain relieving effect. In fact, it is the essential oil used by French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé as a treatment for his burned hands. He was the first to discover aromatherapy and the healing benefits of plant-extracted oils and used it to cure wounded soldiers during World War I. Also, in the 19th century, it was used in France to treat tuberculosis patients during the epidemic. They wondered how workers from lavender fields do not get infected by the virus and so they tried using lavender to their patients. This was the first application of lavender for therapeutic purposes.
In aromatherapy, lavender essential oils have the most numbers of uses. These include treatment of sunburn and sunstroke, relief of joint and muscle pain, relief of asthma and bronchitic spasm, wound treatment (when mixed with povidone iodine), treatment of insomnia and restlessness and relief in vomiting and upset stomach.
Lavender essential oils are also useful for the relief of abdominal swelling, toothache, and pains and sore. It is also used as an insect repellent, treatment of fungal infections and eczema, acne, earache, menstrual cramp, scabies, shingles and sinusitis. It also relieves pain after undergoing surgery. Some hair products also include lavender to their formulation for hair loss prevention and removal of lice.
These are some of the health benefits of lavender essential oils. It still has a lot of uses making it very popular compared to other essential oils. However, be reminded that during application, it must first be diluted with a carrier oil to prevent skin irritations. Also, to check if your skin will exhibit allergic reactions with the oil, perform a skin patch test. Apply a small amount of the solution (a combination of essential oil and carrier oil) unto the back of your wrist and wait for several hours. If no reaction occurs in the spot where it was applied, then it can be used anywhere in the body.
However, for those who have a history of any medical condition, or is currently pregnant, check with your doctor if you can use any essential oil and will not affect your current condition. There are some essential oils that are believed to have adverse effect on the fetus and other existing health conditions, such as asthma, so be careful of what and where to buy them.
