How aromatherapy started?
6000 years ago, aromatherapy is believed to have therapeutic and healing effects. History shows that essential oils are used during ancient times. There are also scriptures that prove the use of aromatherapy in the past. Among the first to utilize the therapeutic properties of plant-extracted oils were the Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greek and Romans.
Aromatherapy started when French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé burned his hands and saw how it was healed after applying lavender oil to the burnt area. From then on, he studied the healing properties of essential oils and used to treat patients during World War I. After which, many health care providers started using aromatherapy as an alternative form of medicine.
There are different types of aromatherapy application. The three common types are aerial diffusion, direct inhalation and topical applications. Aerial diffusion uses diffusers to circulate the aroma of essential oils to fragrant or disinfect a room. Direct inhalation, on the other hand, is a process where an essential oil is inhaled for respiratory disinfection, decongestion and other psychological effects. Topical application is a process where oils are mixed with carrier oils for massage, baths, and skin care.
How does aromatherapy become therapeutic?
Aromatherapists believe that aromatherapy targets the part of the brain that control emotions and pain. Therapists claim that inhaling oils stimulates parts of the brain which controls the physical, emotional and mental health.
There are a wide variety of essential oils available to suit one's needs. Some very useful essential oils for aromatherapy are lavender, peppermint and citrus oil. Lavender and rose oil are used by pregnant women to relieve anxiety during conception. Peppermint oil is also known to relieve nausea and vomiting and to help in digestion. Citrus oil is used to strengthen the immune system.
Other health conditions which may be relieved include stress, anxiety, insomnia, body aches, menstrual problems, menopausal problems, itching and psoriasis.
When not to undergo aromatherapy?
Precautions must be taken when undergoing aromatherapy without professional supervision.
Pregnant women and people with history of asthma, seizures and allergies must consult their doctors before using essential oils. If a person has history of certain medical condition, it is better to seek first the advice of a doctor. There are specific oils which can trigger or worsen specific several illness. Chemotherapy patients must also consult their physicians before trying aromatherapy.
There are some instances where essential oils have to be ingested. This kind of application requires special formulations depending on the health requirement of the user. It must be upon the advice of a professional. They are highly concentrated substances and therefore can have bad effects on the system if taken in its concentrated form.
Researches on aromatherapy and the therapeutic capabilities of essential oils are still ongoing. Many users have attested to beneficial effects of this alternative medicine even though very little scientific evidences are available. As long as proper guidance is observed, aromatherapy is an option anyone can try to ease physical, emotional and mental illnesses.
