Some oils are believed to have antibacterial properties that can kill drug-resistant pathogens such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and Candida but these claims have yet to be proven. Although there are several claims that ingesting oils will have a better effect in the body, intake of high concentrations is dangerous and can cause health damage.

In aromatherapy, essential oils are used for healing due to the scent it possesses. For those who believe in the healing effects of aromatherapy, it is believed that oils can uplift the mind and spirit of the person inhaling it.

Several kinds are also used as home remedies for common ailments. There are oils that are known to treat acne by killing bacteria and dissolving sebum in the face. It also relieves headache by direct inhalation. It also stimulates blood flow when inhaled through diffusion in air and through massage.

In many cases, essential oils are diluted using carrier oils before they are applied to the skin. Since it is highly concentrated, high amounts of pure oils in the skin can cause irritation. It also has to be dissolved in carrier oils since they are usually insoluble in water.
There are many different types of essential oils available in the market.

Peppermint and sweet orange are mixed in beauty products and are applied to oily or acne-prone skin. They are also used to spray rooms to provide a soothing effect. Lemon oil is a mood lifter and is also mixed in toners and beauty products to treat oily skin. Rosemary oil is mixed in hair and cleaning products that give the sweet aroma. Tea tree oil is mixed with anti-dandruff products. It is also a good remedy for acne-prone skin. Eucalyptus oil is used as an insect repellent and is used for disinfection. Rose geranium oil is mixed with perfumes and moisturizers. Lavender oil is mixed in hair and cosmetic products for various skin types. It is also mixed with insect repellent and cleaning products.
