Before there were hospitals, medical professionals and pharmaceutical drugs, our ancestors healed themselves with the help of nature or from whatever they can use from their surroundings. As they went along, our forefathers eventually discovered what is generally considered the first medicines man ever used -- essential oils.
Essential oils are derived from plants through the process of steaming, distillation, solvent extraction or expression. They are called such because the oil that results from the processes is considered the essence of its plant source.
Aside from their medicinal importance, essential oils have been part of ancient culture particularly during religious ceremonies. Their use dates back to 4500 BC when Ancient Egyptians first used them in rituals and for embalming. In present times, these oils are used in making perfumes, soaps and make-up. They are also used to enhance the flavor to food and drinks.

Aromatherapy, as a branch of alternative medicine, first gained recognition in the 20th century through the perseverance of Dr. Edward Bach. However, it was the French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse who rediscovered the healing properties of essential oils. Sometime in 1910, Gattefosse had an accident that resulted in a badly burned hand. He instinctively grabbed the thing closest to him which turned out to be lavender oil and splashed his hand with it to ease the pain. Gattefosse who was more of a perfumer than anything else have always been enthralled by the properties of these oils and his accidental discovery of the healing properties of lavender oil led him to study essential oils a little more. He later came up with the term aromatherapy to classify the use of essential oils in healing.
