AROMATHERAPY is the process of inhaling steam; it is derived from the aromatic essences of plants so that it can balance and harmonize the whole health of the body including mind and spirit. It is an art and a science that deals with the physiological, psychological, and spiritual response of the person to aromatic extracts and observes its inner healing processes.
AROMATHERAPY started about 6000 years ago when it was proven that the aromas from plants had certain therapeutic effects when parts of it were burned, crushed, and put on the palm of the hand. The relaxing feeling that a person got when the scent was inhaled or rubbed on the skin was a sort of healing medicine. These practices were linked to religion, mysticism, and magic. AROMATHERAPY was already practiced in the ancient civilizations of such countries as China, Egypt, and India.
AROMATHERAPY comes from two words, aroma and therapy. Aroma means fragrance while therapy means treatment. That is why it is healing through the scent. It has its roots in nature that affects the whole person in mind, body, and spirit. AROMATHERAPY uses ESSENTIAL OILS; the history of AROMATHERAPY began in Egypt. They first burned their incense that was made from aromatic woods including herbs and spices to honor their gods. The Egyptians had this belief that as the smoke rose to heavens the prayers and wishes would go directly to the deities. Infusion was used to extract oils from aromatic plants, which was also used for medicinal purposes and embalming. The principal use of AROMATHERAPY in embalming was for cosmetic purposes. It preserves the tissues of the bodies for years.
The Egyptians used AROMATHERAPY in various aspects of their lives. The parts and scents of specific plants were used for religious rituals; as the smell would produce a higher consciousness that will make you calmer. Frankincense was burned in the morning in honor of the sun while myrrh was in the evening in honor of the moon. Egyptians followed the principles of AROMATHERAPY and incorporated them to their cooking as well. Some herbs helped the digestive system, protected them against infection, and made the immune system stronger. The Egyptians also used fragrant oils during bath to massage their body.
AROMATHERAPY became well known; it started from Egypt to Israel, then China, India, and all the way up to Mediterranean. India was the first to give us a rich tradition of perfumed oil. The Greeks and Romans also used Mediterranean plants for producing aromatic oils.
The sense of smell runs our lives; scents either motivate us or stop us from doing something. This is because when an aroma travels to the nasal passages of our olfactory system, it activates our limbic system, which has a direct link to the emotional center of our brain. This part also controls many aspects such as the heart rate, blood pressure, stress levels, and all of the other vital criteria that make us human. Like breathing and memory. This is why when we go into a bakery and we smell the freshly made bread with the scent of cinnamon on the side we get to feel better and at ease.
