One of my favorite holiday traditions is the release of the new Dean Koontz book. I can remember all the way back to middle school taking the new book to my finals and beginning to crack the pages in between tests. For me the new book by Dean Koontz means Christmas vacation, the end of the year, and another time for a book from one of my all time favorite authors.
Innocence, Koontz's new book is no different. The book itself reminds us of this peculiar time of year, and the book largely takes place during a blizzard.
Koontz is true to form in his new book. His main themes, the triumph of hope and love, are prevalent more than ever before. It gives me pause because I can't think of a recent Koontz book that deals with these themes quite so vividly; although the Odd Thomas opus is a map to the human heart.
Innocence follows Addison Goodheart (that does seem a bit overemphasized) a young man who must hide beneath the city because his physical attributes strike fear and rage in those that see him. He uses the cover of night (Moonlight Bay anyone?) to visit the city to care for his minimal needs.
On one such routine night, he enters the library only to find that a girl is being chased by a man through the stacks of books. Addison meets Gwyneth, who like him, suffers from attributes that make her a recluse from the world. Together they delve into the darkest reaches of a winter night that has consequences far and beyond the snow that lay on the ground. The unlikely pair becoming what the other lacks; as Addison so adequately puts it to Gwyneth: "We hold each other hostage by our eccentricities."
Innocence is not the best Koontz book, but one of his better reads in recent years. I found the break from Odd to be good, but looking forward to getting back to his story. The story itself is solid, as we can always count on Koontz to do, but it takes some wholly unbelievable turns in its latter half.
All in all Koontz continues to set himself apart from his peers in showing that the worst of human nature can only be overcome by those who cling to hope and those who choose to love, even if it costs them everything.
