Legislative measures failed to stop the spam! But these same regulators around the planet are increasing their penalties for these painful perpetrators. The most recent is the Canadian Anti-spam laws which comes into effect mid next year. Since spam is fundamentally a human issue you should be able to do something about it by engaging anti-spam systems. Anti-spam applications are NOT the only solution we have to block undesired emails and it's not a prefect method. Let's investigate why...
Many anti-spam applications employ exploratory techniques to detect spam emails! The anti-spam process compares inbound emails and checks the email message content against a known profile of spam. Something like it asks the question ..."Does this message look as if it has spam characteristics?" and based on that analysis the anti-spam process makes the final decision to allow the email message or hold it. At best this approach can block most of the spam emails permitting only a small handful to get through. Naturally however, it also stops email that we want to get, and I'm sure that everyone reading this story has some experience with this problem.
The analytical method is not as reliable as it appears! If you relax the settings, you'll get much more spam in your inbox. If the settings are too tight, you'll stop all the spam with the risk of blocking quite genuine messages. A real email incorrectly blocked as spam is called a false positive. If you get large numbers of false positives, you must examine all the spam looking for non-spam messages among the trash. But this completely negates the need and effectiveness of anti-spam program.
The main disadvantage of the analysis method is that the filters that seem fine today can stop working tomorrow! Spammers also use an anti-spam software to refine and tweak their spam so that it can get around the filters. As soon as the vendor improves their anti-spam software, the spammers fine tune their spam methods. That's why we get V1agra and C1alis and many other incorrect terms in spam emails. Certain advanced techniques allow spammers create an email message that looks differently to a human as opposed to the same message when it is read by the anti-spam software, for instance, when an email has text readable by the recipient but the program sees it as an image. These kinds of spam emails are increasing in popularity for spammers now.
Whitelist and Blacklist do not solve the issue either. Adding reputable IP Addresses to a whitelist is not quite as sure as it seems to be. Nowadays viruses are known to use the contents from various address books to forge the emails and send themselves out. It's not possible to add all the email addresses or even email domains to the blacklist either. Spammers do not use genuine email addresses to send spam. Today you receive a spam email from this domain and tomorrow you can receive the self same spam email from a different name. If you blacklist all the spammers' emails, this would result in a blacklist of an immense size and poorer performance of anti-spam programs.
One unique approach to prevent spam is not to filter it, but prevent it from the very outset! This technique makes you totally undetectable to spammers. Using a product like wumber with an email address which you can confidently receive email on yet is only valid for the sender or business that you give it to. It can't be used by anybody else, so it doesn't matter if spammers get a hold of it, they can't use it. This is a proactive approach to spam management while all the other cases mentioned in this article are reactive.
Controlling spam requires out of the inbox thinking! If you can't be seen by a spammer, you can't be spammed! There is also another side to this equation too. If you subscribe to a service with newsletters and other regular email notifications, you can limit the amount of emails that you receive from the people that you have given your email address details to. You can limit the number of emails, the time allowed to send you emails to say just 1 week or 1 minute. The bottom line is the battle against spam is not lost, it just needed a new approach.
Simply put, the war between the spammers and their victims continues for those users who haven't yet subscribed to wumber. So if you're not a wumble (a term given to wumber users) take care and keep your anti-spam filters in fighting trim. You can join wumber anti-spam for free and it's free for everyone to use, so join today!
