If you are not of the select few high school students privileged enough with the opportunity to enroll in a six or seven year bachelors MD program, then applying to medical school the traditional way is the objective. Understanding GPA is key to surviving the pre-med endeavor and successfully applying to choice medical schools. The standardized test that is the MCAT is also a key deciding factor as well, which is significant to getting accepted into medical school.
GPA also known as grade point average which is the mean of all of the grades that were ever taken in undergraduate college. Medical schools rely not only on the cumulative GPA which is the GPA of all the undergraduate classes combined (science and non-science classes), but colleges also rely on your 'science only GPA' as well. The science GPA is made up of only science courses such as chemistry, biology, and physics. Acknowledging this can be overwhelming all in itself. College science courses are usually much more difficult and comprehensive when compared to non-science courses. It is important to remark that medical schools will not identify good and bad candidates based on a grade point average, but it will be based on the most difficult to achieve grade point average. The idea is to keep this information in the back of your mind when deciding which courses to exert the most energy and which courses to ease up on as to not deplete your willpower reserves.
In her book "The Willpower Instinct" Kelly McGonigal does an exceptional job at describing the effects of reducing the amount of willpower an individual has. According to McGonigal, willpower is, in fact, a tangible resource that appears to be all but infinitely supplied. McGonigal discusses techniques that could raise the mind's willpower, however the objective here is to understand that willpower is very significant and when that willpower is reduced, conditions like nervous breakdowns, participating in unruly activities, and even drug abuse can be observed. Willpower, as identified by Kelly Mcgonigal is the mental resource that everyone has which allows for complete comprehensive thinking. It is important for individuals, especially college students, to have enough sustained willpower to concentrate intently during lectures and to ultimately perform successfully on exams. Willpower is a significant resource which the pre-medical student community should intently remark, you will soon find yourself getting burned out if you do not come to terms with your body's physical and, most important, mental limits. An example of depleting one's willpower could be simply described in a situation where a student attempts to spend all night studying and reviewing for an exam which would be administered the next day. This is the common course of action students rely on to help with their disorganized schedules. It is simple to understand that between the social and academic pressures which students endure, there can be very little efforts applied to maintaining an organized schedule which emphasizes studying over extracurricular.
Staying up all night and studying for an exam to be taken the next day isn't a good idea and can show to have consequences. Restricting your brain of sleep and substituting rest with further information processing will greatly reduce your mind's willpower. Depleting the mind's willpower will show to have lasting effects that can be readily observed during the exam. Complete critical thinking tasks, which involve discipline, will be severely impaired. In fact the willpower to read simple exam instructions will most likely be the first detriment that is noticed when the exam is handed back and after it has already been graded. Sitting in a chair taking an exam is a strenuous task, it is taxing. It may be difficult to sit still during the test the next day when you have already used up all of your discipline reserves. In fact I've noticed time and time again students who pull all nighters tend to get done with exams quicker than those who do not stay up all night or even stay up late. This is not because they did so well on the exam, in fact they most likely perform poorer than the rest, well rested students, with simple mistakes to blame. This is because when the students come to questions they cannot answer they are will more than likely guess the answer rather than search for the answer using logic or memory. It is vitally important to acknowledge that willpower concept does exist and that willpower is a limited resource which can be reduced dramatically simply by the activities you are performing.
