Anti-gun movement supporters will often say that the 2nd amendment endangers the American nation by legally putting guns in the hands of criminals. They will then go on to cite tragic incidents of shootings, which, while undoubtedly wrong and evil, only prove how important it is for people to be able to protect themselves. The truth is that law-abiding American citizens should not be deprived of their right to bear arms because of a frightened minority. America needs guns because 2nd amendment arms actually save lives.

Think about it. The criminal classes will not stop acquiring weapons just because of stricter gun control - after all, they are called criminals for a reason! Even now there are ways and means for them to illegally acquire unregistered guns. The last thing that this country needs is for responsible, law-abiding gun owners to be deprived of firearms that they can use in self-defense.

Yes, self-defense is the key factor here. While shooting a turkey for Thanksgiving and bagging that prize buck during deer season are good old American traditions that should not be allowed to die out, the crux of the argument for keeping our 2nd amendment gun rights as they are is that you should be able to defend yourself and your family from any danger. This is regardless of whether that danger comes from nature or from man. In fact, so many incidents of guns saving lives have been reported that it's a wonder that anti-gun activists choose to ignore them all.

It is a solid fact that ordinary citizens carrying guns have stopped may crimes in progress. Convenience store clerks with a rifle within reach have prevented armed robbers from making off with cash. Armed homeowners have stopped burglars from making off with their possessions in the middle of the night. Women fend off sexual predators with the firearms they are currently allowed to carry. And while we hear about terrible mass shootings on the news, we are less aware of all the shootings that were stopped in their tracks by ordinary people who just happened to be carrying their 2nd amendment guns. What makes this so much more amazing is the fact that a lot of the time, this kind of prevention can happen without the gun owner having to fire a single shot.

All these incidents prove that in order to keep its people safe, America needs the constitutional rights provided in the Second Amendment. It follows that you have to stand up and fight for what you believe in by showing your support for gun rights in every way that you can.
