The EMT's began their presentation with a powerpoint which was filled with pictures of car accidents which took place right here in the surrounding region. The EMT's answered many of the student's questions as they continued through the powerpoint slides. EMT's could make anywhere from $10 to $20 an hour they advised us. EMT's could work from 12 hours a week to 40 hours a week on a given schedule. Most EMT's in southern New Jersey were volunteer, they said. This point deterred many students in the class as they sat back in their chairs and crossed their arms in disapproval of what had just been said. I found myself interested in this unique opportunity to volunteer. I wasn't really thinking about the money that being an EMT could bring, I was thinking about the doors which could be opened with the volunteer experience. Volunteering as an EMT and having experience looks GREAT on a resume especially for college.
I had the choice of an accelerated or six month program. I decided to take the 3 week course over the six month. This course met every day, monday - friday, 8am - 5pm. The only pre-requisite in becoming an EMT-B in the state of New Jersey was to have completed a healthcare level CPR course. This could be done through a first aid squad, or by contacting a local training organization. Generally local CPR classes can run from $40 to $95 for the complete course including student work books.
I remember the excitement around the first day of class. It began with the instructor discussing the costs of the course and when payments would be due. The course instructor decided to have us do a preliminary "ice-braking" exercise, where we went around the classroom and introduced ourselves as well as our individual reasoning behind becoming an EMT.
The course to become an Emergency Medical Technician was not an easy task. I feel that if I had taken the course while I was in undergrad the speed of the course would not have felt as quick. In fact a test was administered every day before class. This was not a quiz, this was a full on test. A 70 question exam on everything which that chapter had gone over. It was not easy to accomplish, and for 3 weeks maintaining any kind of social life, while enrolled, was nearly impossible.
