With the release of Cataclysm every player in the game will join the leveling grind one more time. Much like every time Blizzard releases an expansion, this will be a very messy and crowded time for everyone. Some players will hold out a few days to give the starter zones a chance to settle down, while others will jump headlong into the fray to take a shot at the server first achievements. If you are part of the first group you should stop reading now, but if you want to give it a real run you should continue reading.
There are a few general principals that you have to understand to really get the most from your leveling efforts in the game. For starters, a solid quest circuit will outpace random grinding any day of the week. Dungeon running cannot compete in the form that most people use it (though it is great for gear.) From there it is crucial to know a solid circuit to run from without wasting a bunch of time. This part is going to be difficult at first simply because there will be few solid paths to start with as many of the guide writers will use this time to tweak and perfect the paths the found in open beta.
The first important principal you have to master is that you must limit your return trips to town. This means having empty bags to carry your loot and plenty of provisions to last a while. Returning to town after every quest is only a good way to waste time. Since saving time is the overall goal, you should avoid that at all costs.
You will, undoubtedly, end up having to do some quests one at a time as you do all the quests in your log and come back only to find a followup that takes you back out to an area that you just went to. But, overall this will save you hours per level.
Grinding, however, does have a place in the game. There are going to be times in the early part of the expansion that you will find yourself waiting on quest mobs, or fighting over random quest items on the ground. During these times it is best to find a place to sit and grind for a while.
Sitting in one place and waiting is a good way to just waste time, at least by grinding you pass the time a little better and you get experience for your troubles. Picking the mobs you grind on should be done based upon a few things. If you are a skinner, then by all means you should kill skinnable mobs for some extra gold. Humanoids are great otherwise as they drop cloth and gold. From there anything is better than sitting, even skipping the quest period to move on.
With just these two ideas you will speed up your time greatly. If you acquire a leveling guide, you will be unstoppable. A leveling guide isn't a must have to hit 85 quickly, but it will aid you much more than slugging along on your own.
