Truth be told, cat dandruff is a fairly prevalent problem. In reality, these four-legged animals get this infection as often as people do, apart from seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, etc. Sometimes, the problem is usually a simple issue of visible flaking due to a dried-out skin condition. However, as cats are often not used to wearing dark sweaters, minor problems with dandruff go unnoticed often.
Such as some people, some felines might have dry skin issues given to them in general. Most of the aspects that increase dry skin issues in people could share precisely the same results in cats. Dry skin-caused dandruff could be quite worse during wintertime as the moisture in the air would be depleted by indoor heating. Excessive washing could dry the skin of the pet, too. Obvious dandruff may be as a result of cat's poor grooming and excessive weight or arthritis may hinder a cat from reaching its back when grooming.
A healthy cat must ideally have supple, soft skin without any scabs, dandruff or sores. Similar to the need for eczema treatment in humans, the need for cat dandruff treatment should not be treated as a major issue since it's a light form of seborrheic dermatitis. However, dandruff's presence could indicate something as common as presence of parasites or an improper diet.
In many cases, the diet plan of the family pet could also be responsible for dandruff. Insufficient number of fatty acids is the major culprit behind dry skin issues in pets. The skin's balance could also be disrupted by nutritional deficiencies, which usually results in dandruff and dry skin. External or internal parasite infestation could be another determined cause of cat dandruff. Intestinal tapeworms can instigate dandruff issues in cats. Mites, fleas and other external pests could develop allergic skin reactions in the animal, most often resulting in dandruff. Allergic skin reactions are usually caused by fleas. Though not too common, hypothyroidism could be a culprit too. A thyroid gland that is not active enough would not produce sufficient hormones, causing dandruff troubles in the pet. Some warning signs of hypothyroidism, which could be fatal if left untreated, include loss of energy, thinning fur, and putting on weight.
Facts to consider
Several basic dandruff issues can be easily treated by the pet owner. Adequate nutrition, good grooming, and freedom from fleas are issues that are easily controllable. However, an average Joe normally would not be able to diagnose and treat certain health conditions of the cat such as thyroid disorders, diabetes, etc.
Despite that it's quite rare, cheyletiellosis may cause itchy, scaly skin in cats. Also referred to as "walking dandruff," the parasitic mites can produce the same condition or infect humans also. This infectious medical problem occurs suddenly and appears to be a very different kind of dandruff. Loss of fur is very common, and the scaling and flaking gets worse usually on the neck, back and sides of the cat. Though there are very different do-it-yourself solutions for feline dandruff, walking dandruff is only intended to be treated by a veterinary clinic.
