Is there such a thing as youth in a bottle? Some would answer no, but the ones who know the secret know about the rarest oil in the world. Once only known to the rich and famous, thanks to globalization and internet, the words have spread and all of us can benefit from this amazing oil now. What is the buzz about you wonder? Its Argan Oil!
Why Argan oil? Because it has Vitamin E: prevents wrinkles and delays aging. Stimulating cells oxygenation: restores the hydrophilic layer and skin cells thus making the skin more elastic, smooth and shiny.
This oil also has unsaturated acids: Argan oil has about 79% and because of that it ensures a permanent skin hydration, which translates to moisturizing, revitalizing, and nourishing skin.
Last, it's full of essential fatty acids: The oil is also rich in Oleic (C18:1) and Linoleic (C18:2) essential fatty acids. They are not made by the human body, and therefore must be replenished through food or supplements. These fatty acids are responsible for regulating cell function. They maintain the integrity of cellular walls, and allow transference of waste and water. This function plays a big part in skin health.
Argan oil is produced from an Argan nut coming from Argan tree, which only grows in Morocco.
The ancient Berber city of Marrakesh is one of Morocco's three biggest cities and is the country's most important former imperial capital.
Marrakesh, one of the most important cities of Morocco, has a semi-arid climate that features a mild winter but a very hot and dry summer, where you can fry an egg on a stone.
It is said that tourists are amazed how healthy the hair of most Moroccans are, especially the women. They must be using something that keeps their skin and hair moisturized, hydrated, and soft, despite the harsh Marrakesh heat.
The secrete is Argan oil! Argan Oil remains one of the rarest oils in the world.
A very labor intensive process, performed primarily by Moroccan women, is required to shell and crush the fruits prior to pressing the oil. Local Berber women work in fair-trade cooperatives where they hand-crack the Argan nuts in between two stones, a technique theyve used for centuries. Instead of being put through a machine, the raw Argan kernels are hand-extracted from the hard shell, hand-ground in a stone grinder, hand-kneaded for hours and first cold-pressed into the oil.
Oil extraction: Argan nuts contains up to 3 kernels. To produce 1/5 gallon or 4 cups (US) of this rare oil, 66 pounds of kernels and 16 hours of work are needed. That is the reason for the high cost and therefore selling price.
In 1998, the Argan forest in Morocco was designated a UNESCO protected biosphere so argan oil is sustainable.
Now that argan oil is of global interest and not just a regionally-used product, Morocco has seen an upsurge in Argan tree plantations. These not only benefit the environment by stabilizing and shading the soil and increasing the number of Argan trees in existence - they provide economic benefit to the more than two million people who make their livelihoods producing the oil. Most production is by women's co-operatives, and the women earn both household income and the means to provide their children with an education.
As a result of the popularity of argan oil, Moroccan agriculture officials have set a target date of 2020 for tripling annual production to 4,000 tons.
Along with humans, livestock benefit from Argan trees. They graze on the grasses that grow in abundance in the trees' shade, eat the fruits and leaves, and drink water from the aquifers that are more readily replenished where Argan trees grow. The pressed cake residue of oil production is also valuable food for livestock, being high in protein.
Argan oil contains Vitamin E, phenols, squalene, and is high in unsaturated fatty acids. As a food oil, it is used much as olive oil is: as a dipping oil for bread, in couscous and salads, and ground with almonds and honey as a bread dip not unlike peanut butter.
Cosmetic argan oil is used to fight dryness, flaky skin, and wrinkles. Its use has also been advocated in treatment of juvenile acne, rheumatism, and burns.
If you want to simplify your beauty routine, Argan oil is a fantastic go-to beauty elixir used from head-to-toe. Its full of essential fatty acids, anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals that promote your overall health by moisturizing, softening as well as protecting your face and hair from dehydration without harmful toxins and Parabens.
Parabens are the most widely used preservatives in cosmetics and personal care products such as soap, moisturizers, shaving cream and underarm deodorant, according to the Food and Drug Administration. To get a bit science-y, parabens are esters (a compound formed from acid and alcohol) of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The FDA says the most common are methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben.
Companies use parabens to extend the shelf life of products and prevent growth of bacteria and fungi in, for instance, face cream. And that's good, right? Mold is essential to blue cheese, but who wants to smear the face with it?
But some scientists and doctors, such as Dr. Andrew Weils and Dr. Oz shared concerns about parabens as they may be linked to cancer and fertility issues.
