Controlling anxiety comes easy to those who are able to let go their everyday fears and worries without much effort. However, there are those who were born to be worrywarts, always thinking about things too much. This isn't healthy at all.
Before knowing ways to control anxiety, one must know it really is, and the things that contribute to it.
Anxiety differentiates itself from fear as it is more about the uneasiness and worrying about something that's only perceived to happen. Fear is a reaction to something that actually occurred and is used oftentimes as a 'defense mechanism'. Anxiety, on the other hand, seems more of an overreaction. Common causes of not being able to control anxiety include stress and continuous, uninterrupted exposure to nerve-wrecking, last-minute situations (such as rush jobs and tight deadlines.)
Although one may view anxiety as a alarm to some of our daily tasks, feeling anxious all the time is another thing. Not controlling anxiety may result to several side effects such as fatigue, restlessness, the inability to concentrate, short-term memory loss, and neck / back pains.
One effective way to control anxiety is to identify what is causing it. See if it's something doable or not. Doable causes have their deadlines, and the answer is simple – finish it. For instance, a student may be anxious about satisfactorily finishing a project due next month. His way of controlling anxiety would be to plan the project flow, target each task step-by-step until he finishes it in time.
Some causes, however, are not doable either for the time being or, worse, forever. The best thing one can do in controlling anxiety for this is to take his mind off of it and understand that the repercussions he's expecting to happen aren't likely to occur. Anxiety about being single for the rest of one's life is an example. One may get anxious about it but who's to say he'll grow up without a special someone? Yep, it's just what he thinks.
As mentioned earlier, constant exposure to buzzer-beater events may also contribute to one resorting to controlling anxiety. Because they are programmed to feel that way, people who have deadlines every minute may not be adept in controlling anxiety. The best way for these people to somehow manage their anxiety levels is to take a break once in a while. This may seem impossible, but it can be done. A 10-minute break or a walk outside the office would be enough.
Also, trying to not think so much about the perceived outcome of something is another way of controlling anxiety. Oftentimes, people expect the worst even if the circumstances technically prohibit it from happening. An example would be an employee being asked to come up with an extensive financial report the following morning. The employee, while rushing the task and not controlling anxiety, might feel as if the boss is right beside him, checking his report detail after detail at 11 PM. This might even be counter-productive.
Controlling anxiety can be as easy as the fight-or-flight situation. While most would prefer running away, fighting and facing the challenges would be more beneficial in the long run.
