No one is born and will die perfect. Everybody in this planet we call Earth has, in one way or another, have his own set of imperfections. While some put their God-given talents to good use and embrace their flaws, others choose to go the other road and act as if their 'imperfections' serve as hindrances to mankind's ultimate goal of living life to the fullest – thus giving birth to the concept of self improvement.
Humans have a habit of trying to prove themselves deserving of so many things expected from them. They push their limits to experience improvement and eventually deliver. Their efforts only have two possible results – success and failure.
It's definitely easy to build one's self-worth upon experiencing success, but the road to improvement isn't as easy when experiencing failure.
Getting self improvement out of something perceived as a wrongdoing is quite similar to getting a stone and trying to see it as a nugget of gold. It's senseless, invaluable, irrelevant, and oftentimes, frustrating. One will find it quite hard to see failure as a contributor to improving oneself when each and every step that leads to it is a perceived miscalculation.
What is not being highlighted in this fact is that each step has been 'perceived.' If people would just try and understand how beneficial it is to change one's perception, it would be a lot easier to make sense out of things and help one make his self improvement goals become more feasible.
Using our example earlier, a stone will remain a stone if it's viewed as such. One who is experiencing self improvement would think that this stone, when collected, can be used to build a strong home – a strong shield, a strong foundation. It would be something that he can use to protect himself while continuing his way to improvement. Such opportunity couldn't have been possible without the stones themselves, which in this context would be the failures that one goes through during the course of his lifetime.
Unfortunately, this is what most people fail to realize. Experience is much, much more valuable than the tangible and usually temporary things they get out of success. Having many learning experiences changes and molds one's character, skills, and even his outlook in life. The self improvement happens as all of these experiences come along. The person has become the better version of him and is much ready to take on life's challenges before he even knows it.
Bottomline, self improvement isn't something that people should aim for. It isn't a goal, but a mixed pot of failures, successes, attempts, challenges, and learnings that one has to go through to really understand his strength and what things he's capable of doing. Human beings do not achieve self improvement if they don't realize what they can actually do and how much they can endure in times when they have no other option but to face these challenges.
In the end, self improvement is all about having the right perspective.
