When watching TV nowadays, one cannot help but see many shows which feature people who are not good at controlling anger – either real-life or scripted. There are people who display anger because they are provoked, while some are actually angry because of internal reasons – hatred, jealousy, and sometimes, even intense happiness.
One couldn't help but imagine if it might actually be a better world if everyone has a way of anger management.
Granted, not controlling anger and letting it off initially is a good way for people to release highly toxic emotions that people may have kept inside them for some time, and it may actually make one feel better. It can serve its purpose for a while. However, not controlling anger may actually lead to even worse consequences.
Fortunately, there are many ways of controlling anger.
The simplest and most effective of controlling anger, of course, is to stay away from the stimulus causing this feeling. At times, it could simply be avoided. Arguing with someone, for example, can be ended if one or both parties just decide to keep quiet, eventually (and hopefully) initiating one to stop blabbering as well.
Practicing deep breaths when presented with a stimulus can also help in anger management. Anger causes the body's blood pressure to shoot up, eventually leading the blood vessels to tighten. The need to carry more oxygen to the blood will force the respiratory system to work harder, and this is why angry people have faster heartbeats and shorter breaths. Deep breathing helps neutralize the process and eventually puts everything back to their normal paces.
An example is when kids accidentally break things inside the house. Parents who are not controlling anger may reprimand their kids during the first few seconds (which is normal), but are unable to stop and may eventually continue blurting out harsher words than before. This may have a bad effect on children. Deep breathing may eventually calm down the parent and divert them instead to reminding their kids about being a little more careful about things.
Positive thinking may even contribute to controlling anger. Since most of the stimuli presented to angry people are perceived to be negative, counteracting it with the opposite may help neutralize the feeling. This can be done by either reinforcing a positive thing after the negative, or by spinning the negative for it to become something positive. An angry guy who has been cheated on may feel more motivated in anger management if he's told that the girl he dated doesn't deserve a great guy like him (reinforcement) or that, at least, he's not the bad half as he wasn't the one who did the cheating in the first place (spinning).
There are other ways of controlling anger, but it all boils down to acknowledging the fact that it's a universal feeling. Everyone goes through stressful things that make them feel angry at times, but there are people who win the battle by taking control of their anger, thereby helping them take control of their lives more effectively.
