Sail Clear of These Dangerous "Rocky Roads"!
Sail long enough and you will go aground. Discover six of these deadly navigation chart symbols to help you avoid damage to your hull, keel, shaft, rudder, and propeller.
It has happened to me twice. Not many sailors will admit that. Often it happens in familiar territory, close to home. We get careless and we stop paying attention to the tide charts and our navigation charts. I got lucky both times and only damaged my ego and not my beloved boat. It could have been much worse. Rocks, debris, you name it!
Know the sailing navigation rock symbols. Scan your nautical chart or chart plotter. Sail clear to avoid serious damage to your sailboat hull, propeller, keel and rudder. See more below!
Look over your nautical chart or electronic plotter to mark and identify rock symbols close to your sailing course line. Make this standard procedure before you enter an anchorage, sail into a marina, make landfall along the coast, or set sail on a cruise. Realize that the sea bottom represents a dynamic environment-- so be on the lookout for changes in new editions of your charts and cruising guides.
Look for "Plus-Signs" Beneath the Waves
Scan your chart for plus signs or plus signs surrounded by a circle of dots. These rocks are never visible, even at the lowest tides.
Sail Clear of "Dots-in-Four-Corners" Rocks
These rocks are awash-- which means they lie just at or below the surface of the water-- at low tide. You may or may not see these rocks break the surface at low tide.
On NOAA charts that show a datum of mean lower low water (MLLW), rocks awash may be visible at some low tides. Rocks awash on these charts will most often never be visible.
Avoid Contact with Dangerous "Asterisk" Rocks
Look for common asterisk symbols or asterisks surrounded by dots on your nautical chart or plotter. These rocks poke their deadly heads out of the water at low tide, but cover up at high tide. That's just one more reason to know the stage of the tide whenever you enter a harbor, anchor your boat, or make landfall along a coastline.
Some rocks may be accompanied by heights. The green tint indicates an "intertidal" land feature-- or one that uncovers and covers with the tide.
Look out for indications of the "drying height" (visible portion of the danger), above low water. At high water, this dangerous rocky ledge will be invisible. Stay clear of green-tinted "ship killer" symbols found on your nautical chart or electronic chart plotter!
