Frankincense is very well known and easily a by-word even for kids. Frankincense came from the old-French words "franc" and "encens" which literally means "high quality incense". More popularly used in religious rituals, this resin is harvested by tapping the bark of the frankincense tree and collecting what is called "tears" and letting them harden.
Frankincense essential oils are then extracted from the resin by steam distillation. The essential oil extracted has a very distinct sweet fragrance but would somehow differ in flavor depending on the variant of the frankincense tree. Most notably, Indian frankincense has a very fresh, soothing smell while the Olibanum has a balsamic-spicy, lemony fragrance.
Frankincense essential oils are also used in many perfumes and traditional medicine. In traditional medicine, frankincense resins are ingested to aid in digestion and promote healthy skin. However, the consumption of the resin has very specific guidelines, only the translucent kind with no black or brown impurities is edible .
This would look like a yellowish candy that is chewed like a gum. However there is strong opposition to this practice and as a precaution, experts advised against ingesting frankincense essential oil or resin.
The benefits of topical application and aerial diffusion of frankincense essential oils though is already rich as it is that to ingest, it might be a little excessive for some quarters. Examples of the benefits of topical application would be relief of muscle pains and stiffness when massaged on the affected part. The application of frankincense essential oils on the chest also relieves congestion and other respiratory ailments.
Another benefit is said to help in the removal of stretch marks and scars. However, it is best advised, as a precaution, to test on a small portion of the skin first to determine whether you have any allergies to frankincense essential oils. Allergic reactions to frankincense essential oils are usually manifested in skin irritations and rashes, so you better take the precaution seriously.
Aerial diffusion of frankincense essential oils is said to aid in the treatment of various psychological and physical illnesses like asthma, emphysema, insomnia, hysteria and anxiety. The scent is said to help in relaxing the mind and healing the body, thus making it an all-around cure.
With the vast medical applications of frankincense essential oils, it is no wonder that this has been the preferred gifts to royalties since the ancient times. Whether applied or diffused in the air, the health benefits of frankincense to the mind and body are indeed amazing.
