The use of essential oils has been found to have been practiced in ancient times. In ancient Egypt, it is widely known that they extracted oils from different plants for health and cosmetic purposes. In the Bible , essential oils from frankincense and myrrh were mentioned more than a hundred times along with other substances. It is said that these oils were God's gift to mankind, an unending source of cure for most illnesses.
An essential oil is basically pure hydrophobic liquid which contains, in simple terms, the "scent" or "essence" of a plant. This extract has been widely used for centuries in the production of perfumes, soaps, cleaning agents, cosmetics and yes, even food.
There are several different processes to extract essential oils from plants. These are distillation, expression, solvent extraction and, most recently, florasols extraction. Essential oils are extracted from mostly all parts of the plant, from roots up to the leaves and even the seeds. To draw the line, essential oils are used for two major things, for cosmetic and pharmacological purposes.
You can go to your favorite grocery store and you will be surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands of products with essential oils. Let's look at the cosmetics first; you have got lavender soaps, rose soaps, jasmine soaps and lemon soaps to name a few. These products, especially if they are "all-natural" would contain the essential oils of the plants in order to have the scent or essence of it. In some cases, even those products that are intended for cosmetic or aesthetic use would have a few healing or therapeutic effects too.
The most common and arguably the most popular healing or medical essential oils that has been around for centuries is methyl salicylate or more commonly known as "oil of wintergreen". We have used this essential oil almost all our lives that the scent is recognized by most everyone. Other very popular scents would be those that we smell in spas. These scents have several effects to the body and mind that include relaxation among others.
In the continued study of essential oils in the field of medicine, more and more "magical" uses are being discovered. But with the knowledge that our ancestors used these same oils in their time, it might be safer to use the word "re-discovery".
The people of ancient times must have known the potentials , if not the full power, of essential oils in man's total well-being, otherwise they would not have put so much importance to it. Remember that the three kings who visited the infant Jesus bearing gifts fitting to a king, and those gifts include frankincense and myrrh.
The other healing benefits of essential oils are still yet to be discovered but for those who are already in the market, they are getting a very good feedback from people in all walks of life. In the end, this simple and abundant substance might indeed be the way to a healthier mankind.
