Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that can be traced back to ancient times. It was discovered that ancient Egyptians, Greeks and other early civilizations were using hydrophobic liquid with volatile plant materials to treat several illnesses. These hydrophobic liquid, known as essential oils, were extracted from an assortment of plant species that claim to have medicinal value and altering effects on a person's emotional condition. Although not yet widely accepted in the mainstream health community, aromatherapy has a lot of potential, and it might just indeed be a gift from our ancestors.
The medical value of aromatherapy is very popular nowadays, especially in managing a person's emotional state. Lemon oil, for example, is popular for its anti-depressant or anti-stress properties. This form of aromatherapy is often applied through aerial diffusion or direct inhalation.
These essential oils that are sold together with a heated diffuser could easily fill a small room with its relaxing scent, giving you aromatherapy all over. There are also personal pocket inhalers that provide quick relief anywhere. Other essential oils for aromatherapy that give the same effect are lavender, jasmine, chamomile and peppermint. These are just a few examples of the more widely popular essential oils used in aromatherapy for the purpose of altering a person's mood or emotional condition.
The other two aromatherapy applications are more direct and is said to be questionable and even dangerous. Topical application or direct application to the skin is common in general massages, baths and skin care. Peppermint for example, when applied directly to the skin is a very effective ant deterrent.
Lavender essential oil in soaps and lotions has antiseptic effects and said to hasten the healing of wounds. However, because essential oils used in aromatherapy are highly concentrated, it can cause rashes, irritations and skin burns with excessive use. Ingestion of essential oils in aromatherapy is also gaining popularity as people are getting more adventurous with food.
Marjoram oil, as an edible essential oil, is used widely as a general relaxant like neroli oil that has been in use since the 16th century. On the other hand, eucalyptus oil can be toxic when ingested while cedar oil is said to cause liver damage. So just like any other medicine, caution is always advisable as there are always two sides to a coin.
Aromatherapy, which was once considered by ancient civilizations as primary medicine; if not often the only treatment, is now being considered as alternative medicine. The full potential of aromatherapy is yet to be discovered or should we say re-discovered. Its performance is now being well documented and more and more people are patronizing it.
Since essential oils are fully organic, the emergence of aromatherapy in treating various illnesses might prove to be the answer to the now growing problem with synthetic medicine. In the end, it might prove that nature does provide us with everything we need, that cure is always around us, and we only need to find it.
