This time auto manufacturers are again recruiting others to help in their program of half truths in an effort to pry money from the public and mechanics that can't afford it. Just to line their collective pocketbooks from great quarterly earnings.
This time it is about Intellectual Property rights and scan tools. Yes, you read that right, Scan Tools. You see the car manufacturers make lots of profit per unit selling scan tools to diagnose their cars, and they want more people to buy them, including mechanics.
Why? Because it is not just the original purchase, but all the add on accessories, software upgrades (until they retire it) replacement parts, training and so forth. This is a massive profit center for them and they are in complete control of it from cradle to grave.
I suspect the profits are so great on these, that they can make as much selling 1 of them as they make on one car. And it is an easier sell.
For the unsuspecting or limited knowledge person their statements seem to be directed to save you money and headaches. But is it really?
What is interesting about this is the auto manufacturers like General Motors, which you will recall had to be saved from itself, does not publicly make statements. They have an employee attend an industry meeting and make their statements for them under the guise of his opinion.
They throw a few bucks at some industry leader for an article professing all their products virtues and demonizing competition.
The whole reasoning for this is so that companies can't be sued for libel. Only the employee can be sued, and most likely if said company were named as well, they would throw him under the bus, like Toyota did years ago when they blamed their mechanics for the Unintended Acceleration. The latest trial evidence clearly shows Toyota is the culprit, not the mechanics.
One of their pet peeves is to discuss Intellectual Property rights and point fingers at China whom they accuse of stealing their Intellectual Property and making counterfeit tools. Funny, but I remember similar statements about the Japanese and then the Taiwanese when they were making inroads with their products around the world.
Yes, some of that early stuff was trashy, but look at the quality now.
If you recall many manufacturers, not just auto manufacturers and parts manufacturers took their manufacturing business with its IP and went first to Mexico and then to Asia to have products built so they could save money.
In effect these manufacturers created their own problem, so why are they complaining they created it?
I have seen a prerelease version of several articles that focus on the situation where the author tears their arguments apart. Here is a link in the resource / bio box to the first in the series he has placed online.
Do yourself a favor and read this information, it might just open your eyes to some manufacturer tactics and save you some serious money!
