Lucid dreaming – is it dangerous?
What is really happening when you try to control your dreams? Lucid dreaming is an exercise, you dream and at the same time maintain your consciousness just to have an influence on your dream. This means that you can create whatever you want in your dream , you can do whatever you want to do, go wherever you want and meet with who you want. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? Nevertheless many people wonder if it is at all dangerous? Is lucid dreaming a safe practice? Let's see.
Lucid dreaming and its effects
Many people sooner or later experience a certain type of lucid dream. During such a dream you may see that you're saying to yourself something like "that's just a dream" or "I must be dreaming". Most often this is a lucid dream. You realize that you're sleeping in your bed and that everything you experience is just a dream. Some people use different methods to induce a lucid dream, they take supplements, listen to special music. There are people who say that by controlling their dreams they can fight off certain fears and phobias in real life just because they conquer them in a sleep.
Everybody knows that it is very important to have a restful sleep because it helps to rebuild the body and the brain and it prepares the brain for the next day. So dreaming is a very important part of our lives. And at first glance lucid dreaming seems harmless, but is it really so?
Are there any dangers associated with lucid dreaming?
If you really want to lucid dream, I think there are some things you should watch out for. Here are a few potential "dangers":
1. Dream paralysis: While dreaming our body locks certain big muscle groups in order to stop the body from moving. During a lucid dream you may feel this paralysis and it may really scare you if you've never experienced it before. You should try to move a small muscle just to wake the body up out of this state.
2. Psychological Effects: Sometimes your fears can be overcome, you can improve your memory and creativity, you may have less nightmares. Unfortunately some people experience more nightmares and feel that whatever they did in a lucid dream they can also do in real life.
3. Addiction: If you lucid dream a lot, you can get addicted to it. But don't forget that we can get addicted to almost anything. Sometimes people claim that lucid dreaming can make you see the world and life in an unrealistic way and that after some time you may not be able to differentiate between what is real and what is not.
Lucid dreaming is something that can happen on its own
There are people who practice lucid dreaming just because they want to take control of their inner world and create the fantasy world for themselves. There are lots of different information, memories and inspiration in our unconscious mind. And for this reason exploring our unconscious mind can be beneficial, but it's better to be careful. We always have to use good sense and know our limits.
