The first few weeks after giving birth is sure to be a roller coaster ride. After the much anticipated delivery day, you're going to get your hands on the actual job of rearing a baby. Filled with sleepless nights and round-the-clock feeding, the first month is indeed going to require a lot of strength and patience, especially for first time mothers. Here are 10 useful guidelines on how to deal with the crazy first few weeks.
1. Decide whether you're going to feed your newborn baby with formula, breast milk, or a combination of both. If you plan to go back to work immediately after, a combination is recommended. You can choose to pump breast milk and store some for future use. However, not all mothers may lactate after pregnancy. With that, some may resort to formula milk. This can also be ideal for babies who are lactose intolerant or allergic to specific kinds of milk.
2. Feed your baby using an anti-colic bottle to avoid hiccups. Also use bottles that are BPA free, non-toxic and are safe to be sterilized. The bottles need to be cleaned and sterilized thoroughly because your baby's tummy is still delicate.
3. Every time you feed your baby, do not forget to make him burp. Otherwise, he would cough out excess milk after feeding.
4. Clean his umbilical area with alcohol with 70% solution. It would not hurt your baby like it might seem, but it would only trigger a reaction because of the cool liquid.
5. Your baby still hasn't developed his complete senses. He can barely recognize things and colors, and can barely hear sounds around him. So do not expect him to respond to your attempts in making him smile until the 6th week mark.
6. Your newborn child's body is very delicate. Carry him with extreme care because his skull has not yet developed fully. A newborn baby is also susceptible to the shaken baby syndrome.
7. Arrange a proper sleeping area for your baby. If he's sleeping with you on your bed, be sure to keep enough space to prevent you from accidentally suffocating your baby with your body. Also, if you have a separate crib, be sure that it is free of hard and sharp objects.
8. Expose your baby to sunlight every morning. This would give him his daily dose of natural Vitamin D and help remove the yellowish complexion in babies. However, do not overdo it and make sure your baby is not left unattended.
9. Put mittens, booties and head cap on your baby. There is the tendency for him to scratch his eyes or eat his hands, so you have to protect them with mittens. It would also protect your newborn from extreme weather. Just be sure to have it washed thoroughly before using it again.
10. If your baby cries incessantly, try to calm him with a long "Sssh" sound. This imitates the sound he used to hear in your uterus during your pregnancy. In addition, try cuddling him because babies want to feel warm and cozy.
