Some women only jumpstart their prenatal care halfway through their pregnancy. Some enjoy the time while their baby bump is not as big yet to cause any hindrance. However, women should understand that the first trimester of pregnancy is highly crucial for the development of the child. Missing prenatal care during this period could have ill effects on the development of the baby.
By the time you miss your first period, you could already be at least two weeks pregnant. A pregnancy test kit may only show a positive result 10 days after missing your period. It is during the early first trimester in which most women experience the signs and symptoms of being pregnant. During this period, the placenta in which the baby will develop and grow, starts to expand to prepare your body.
Although it can't be felt palpably, your uterus also begins to grow larger, rounder and softer. Pregnant women can also experience spotting during this early period. About six to twelve days after being conceived, the embryo will plant itself into the wall of the uterus. For some, it can be as evident as spotting, but some may merely feel dull cramping. Although symptoms may differ from one person to another, the common signs of pregnancy are the following:
• Backaches.
• Nausea or morning sickness.
• Tiredness or fatigue.
• Swollen or tender breasts.
• Frequent urination.
• Unusual food cravings.
• Headaches.
While you may not observe some apparent movements yet, remarkable developments take place during the early part of your pregnancy. During the first month, the infant will grow from about a quarter of an inch inside a sac of water called the amniotic fluid. After conception, the father's sperm would have already determined the baby's sex. Some important organs will also begin to develop such as the heart, the lungs and brain. Though your baby still does not have an definite form during this period, tiny spots for the eyes, nose and ears already begin to appear. The nervous system also begins to develop during this part of pregnancy.
With that, it is significant for an expectant mother to observe proper health measures during this crucial period. By the time you confirm your pregnancy, it is important to begin proper prenatal care. Your OB Gynecologist would prescribe the proper vitamins and supplements to take. Know your family's health history to take note of any possible complications on your pregnancy. You should also take note of the following especially during the first month.
• Smoking should be stopped during pregnancy to avoid respiratory problems on the unborn child.
• Coffee, tea and caffeine intake should be diminished.
• Avoid inhaling harmful hazardous fumes like paint.
• Do not take any other drugs apart from those prescribed by the doctor.
• Avoid x-rays and microwaves because over exposure to radiation is harmful for the infant's health.
• Moderate intake of Vitamin A supplements because it may pose risks for the baby. Only take it from the natural sources.
• Do not come in contact with cat litter since it contains harmful toxins that can have bad effects on the fetus.
