Pregnancy is probably one of the most arduous experiences that most women will have to go through in her lifetime. However, some say that child rearing and raising a toddler is much tougher since it requires utmost patience and would persist for a long period of time. There are certain stages that you have to go through in raising your child. You will have to take it a step at a time, but never losing sight of your goal of raising your child to become a well-balanced individual. Raising a child requires a gradual transition of milestones.
Here are some tips in how to raise a toddler:
• A toddler, by nature, is curious about everything that goes on around him. They go on exploring things on their own, touching, eating and sucking on whatever they like. You have to make sure that his environment is clean and child proof. There are companies that offer child proofing services including installing stair barricades, setting up rubber mats, and fixing sharp edges around your home.
• Given the natural behavior of children, be sure to be cautious of the toys that you give. Some toys have lead, which causes problems in the development of the nervous system of toddler. Even during your pregnancy, you should have already avoided items infused with lead because it affects the development of a baby.
• Teach your toddler what's right and what's wrong. It is your responsibility to guide him as to which behavior is acceptable and which ones are not. Give him an environment where he has alternatives. For instance, if he tries to gnaw on a dirty material, constantly give him his teeter instead of simply withdrawing the dirty material. This will teach him to identify that the teether is the proper piece for chewing.
• Establish a reward system. Acknowledge his proper behavior by offering a prize or an incentive. That way, your baby can have a perception of what's right and what's wrong. Moreover, if your toddler insists on having or doing something that you disapprove of, don't give him a reward.
• Avoid punishing him. Physically hurting your child whenever he doesn't adhere to your instructions would only instill fear, insecurity and resentment in your toddler. What you want to achieve is to teach them, not punish them. Hence, simply talk to your toddler properly to help them understand the consequences of their wrongdoings. You just have to be extra patient with your toddler.
• Show your toddler how you feel. If you toddler keeps on pulling your hair, you should say "ouch" and show him you're hurt. It help develops empathy in children.
• Expose him to other children of his age range to improve his social skills. Your toddler may be shy at first, but will eventually learn how to interact with other kids if you constantly bring him to places such as a playschool or even your community park.
• Develop good eating habits while he's still young. Include him in the dining table for him to get used to meal times. He will find it easier to use his eating utensils properly when he observes adults. Toddlers tend to imitate what they see, and showing them what to emulate is a good practice.
