When you hear the word "dolls", the words that would most likely pop into your mind are "Barbie", and most probably "Ken". The partnership of Barbie and Ken has sent the world on a craze and the females, whether young or old, have definitely fallen for these dolls. Millions and millions of these dolls have been sold and their collections have been continuously growing. But aside from Barbie and Ken, there are other dolls that have captured the hearts of many- the Blythe dolls.
Blythe dolls were originally released by Kenner, a US-based toy company for one year. What sets Blythe dolls different from the other dolls? Blythe dolls have larger heads and eyes that change color with a simple pull of a string. A few years after its first release, the Japanese toy company, Takara, produced new versions of the doll.
From the original 11-inch dolls, Takara has produced two more versions of them, the Petite Blythe, which is 11.2 cm long, and the Middie Blythe. The collection of these dolls has grown big and collectors spend as much as thousands of dollars for a single doll. The usual prices range from as low as $60 to as high as hundreds of dollars. The prices depend on the edition of the doll- the more expensive ones are usually the limited edition releases.
Though the initial release of Blythe dolls by Kenner had been short, the company was able to release four versions of Blythe dolls with various hair colors. They released three brunette versions, differing only in hairstyles, and one blonde. From Takara's first release, more and more members of the Blythe family have come out. Aside from the original Petite, Middie and Full-sized Blythes, changes in the hairstyles, eyes and body shapes have been introduced, yielding more versions of Blythe dolls. In 2011, Takara celebrated the 10th anniversary of these dolls, where different faces of Blythe dolls have been exhibited at Parco Factory.
More and more Blythe dolls are now coming out as they get customized by collectors and doll enthusiasts. Blythe dolls can directly be bought from Junie Moon in Japan, or from online stores like eBay. One of the concerns when buying dolls from online stores is the question of authenticity. Recently, there have been fake versions of these dolls coming out and scammers use these online stores to trick people. Some fake dolls are even placed in original Blythe doll boxes while some look like the real ones.
As more and more people are drawn to the habit of collecting Blythe dolls, more and more people have used this as a way of making money. Some doll enthusiasts would buy Blythe dolls, customize them by changing their hair colors, adding accessories, and making clothes for them, and sell them at a higher price. Some of them would even conduct auctions for Blythe dolls and the prices of these dolls soar as high as hundreds of dollars.
Taking care of a Blythe doll could really be an expensive habit, but truly a rewarding one. Many Blythe doll collectors would laugh at the thought of spending too much for a single doll, but they always say that collecting Blythe dolls is a fulfilling achievement for them.
