In today's wired world where nearly everyone we come into contact with are on some social network or other, it might be a little difficult for those in more "traditional" fields such as real estate to adapt to this new online culture and way of doing business. Many experienced realtors may end up shying away from these new trends, and in the process, end up losing sales, or at least not getting as much business as they should had they taken their transactions online.
So what are some of the biggest challenges in using social media for real estate marketing and how can one get past those? There are many possible answers to this question, but here are some of the more basic issues that realtors may face today.
Fear of the New and Unknown
Let's face it. Some of us, especially the veterans in the field, may have this tendency to reject new concepts and methods, and just stick to what's been tried and tested, and proven to work for the past decade or so. Heck, even the ones who are more welcoming to new technology could get pretty intimidated with things like social media, SEO, analytics, et cetera.
However, to be a successful realtor, one has to be able to easily adapt to current trends, and learn how to use such trends to their advantage. This includes learning marketing techniques that fit this day and age, and using possibly previously unheard-of tools that are now made available to us (most for free, too), thanks to the introduction of new technology and ideas.
Unwillingness to Commit to a Social Media Marketing Campaign
As we all know, real estate is pretty much a relationship-based business, and is built upon a foundation of networks, contacts and other resources. One of the most common mistakes among realtors is the failure to see the value of online relationships, dismissing these as frivolous, or at best, less important than face-to-face contact. Because of this, they refuse to commit the necessary time and resources required to cultivate online rapport with potential clients.
Instead of viewing social media as a totally different way of developing client relationships, it may be best to see it as an additional step that sets you on the path to establishing your network, or as the saying goes, as a way "to get your foot in the door".
Utilizing a Website That Is Outdated and/or Not Well-Designed
Unfortunately, a website that may have worked for you in 2000 would most likely not have the same effect in 2013. With the progress that's been made in the fields of web and graphic design, readers and audiences now have much higher expectations. On top of that, with so many competing sites out on the web, it's very easy for people to simply move on to another, more pleasant or informative site.
Remember that your website will be what mainly represents you online, so it may be a good idea to make the necessary investments to ensure that your site is both easy on the eyes, and has regular, fresh content that your desired audience would be interested in.
