Parachute cord, more popularly known as paracord, is a hot item in stores due to their strength. These are made from tough nylon cords, braided together to form one rope. 550 paracord type is a paracord manufactured in compliance with the standards in MIL-C-5040H.
This is a military standard for the production of 550 paracord. There should be 7 to 9 strands braided together, each having a 3-ply inner strand. The overall thickness of the cord should be 5/32 on an inch, or about 4 mm. the approximate compressed diameter is 1/8 of an inch. When stretched, the cord should elongate to about 30% of its original length.
Military standard paracord have a limited color range. The cords' outer colors are limited to black, white, off-white (natural), foliage green, coyote brown, olive drab, drab orange (safety orange/solar orange), drab red (medic red), royal blue, and silver. The outer cord is wrapped with a flexible braided nylon. The texture is silky smooth. Hence, the entire length of the cord has less possibility of acquiring kinks. General-grade 550 paracord is slightly rougher in texture. The colors of the inner strands are limited to one black, one yellow, and the rest are white. Colors outside of these military markings can be considered as commercial-grade. The Titan? Paracord is 100% in compliance withal these military specifications for a military grade 550 paracord. It is very durable and lightweight. It is guaranteed 100% bump-free and bulge-free. Unlike other types of ropes, Titan? Paracord is kink-free. Users are assured that the cords are strictly made in accordance to military specifications. There is even a colored government contractor marker within the cords. Genuine military grade comes with a MIL-C-5040H Type III certification.
The most definite characteristic is that a genuine one must have a weight bearing capacity of 550 pounds. This means that the cords can withstand at least 550 pounds of unmoving weight. This might seem as a hefty amount of weight in theory. In actual use, this characteristic is very important as life and limb may become fully dependent on this feature alone. Each of the 7 (can also be 8 or 9) strands can support about 35 to 50 pounds. The 3 inner strands, when used individually, can hold at least 17.5 pounds. Commercial 550 paracord only has 6 strands or 2-ply inner strands. The flexible outer sheath actually boosts the weight-bearing capacity of the entire parachute cord to up to 200 pounds. Rip-off 550 paracord may claim to have this quality, but beware. There is nothing better and safer to use than a real, 100% military-grade 550 paracord.
Another difference is the price difference between real military grade and commercial paracord. Genuine 550 paracord is more expensive than commercial ones. The price difference may one day be a difference between life and death. If using for rescue and safety purpose, it is best to choose the more expensive military grade 550 paracord.
