The soundboard is the piece of wood the piano strings are stretched across, behind the iron frame in the case of an upright piano, and below the iron body in a grand piano.
The function of the soundboard is to transform the vibration of the strings into audible tones much like a speaker of a radio. It has a curved crown to produce the correct pressure against the strings, which enables for maximum sound projection. Ribs are positioned on the underneath, or back of the soundboard. These not only help to retain the crown and give strength, but also help to distribute tone across the total of the soundboard. Hardwood bridges are glued in position on the top side of the soundboard to transmit the vibrations from the strings to the soundboard.
Put simply, a piano without a soundboard would sound tinny, with no depth of tone, and would be very quiet, with no potential for any substantial volume.
The larger the soundboard on a piano, the superior the sound will be. The soundboard in a smaller piano is less flexible and generates a thinner sound.
The reverse of the Soundboard
On the back of the soundboard you can see the ribs. The ribs on the back of the soundboard are clearly visible. Most upright pianos these days are left bare at the back, but in the past, they have often been covered with a backing cloth, stretched out over a backframe. More often than not dark in color, this cloth and its' frame can usually be removed with a screwdriver.
Having a good look over the reverse side of a soundboard is a good idea if you are able to get to it. From the front, the soundboard is pretty well covered by strings, keys and the iron frame. The view from the back is uninhibited by such things, and it is a lot less complicated to check for breaks in the soundboard. It is also good to check that the ribs are all firmly glued and solid, which is easily done with a swiftlook-over.
