SEO seems to be widely popular in establishing online presence. It's no wonder, though, since SEO can really rake in results when done right.
You have to take note of the phrase "when done right" as you develop your SEO campaign. The truth is that you can commit errors as you go through the SEO process. You might select a useless keyword, build too much for search engines instead of human users, neglect the robots.txt file, and many more. However, these are honest mistakes. They are forgivable, to an extent.
Another thing you can do that does not file under "SEO done right" is using black hat SEO techniques. Unlike the honest mistakes mentioned before, these ones are unforgivable.
In SEO, It Matters if it's Black or White
In SEO, techniques are divided into white hat and black hat. White hat techniques are legitimate ones: good placement of keywords, careful architecture of the website, and building healthy and reputable links.
Black-hat SEO, also called spamming, consists of underhanded techniques. These are attempts to exploit the algorithms of search engines to gain boosts in ranking. Why are they unforgivable? Well, it is cheating and anyone who uses such SEO techniques almost always does it intentionally. Moreover, while they may have worked in the past, search engines have developed a lot. These techniques don't work anymore. For your sake, don't believe anyone who tells you otherwise.
Common Black Hat Techniques
If you are hiring a company to do SEO services for you, you have to make sure they don't use black hat SEO techniques. In order to avoid them, you must get to know common black hat techniques.
Keyword Stuffing
Keyword stuffing is the oldest trick in the Dark SEO book. This is using repeated keywords up to the point that they don't make sense to a human reader anymore. Search engines are now capable of analyzing keyword frequency and density. They can ignore pages that have way more keywords than usual and consequently ignore those pages for search results.
Invisible Text
Using invisible text is another black hat technique. Spammers will code a page so that the text will have the same color as the background, rendering it invisible to the human eyes but still visible to search engine crawlers (as they view pages through the html code).
Search engines can now ignore words that have the same color as the background. They will even penalize or ban outright any page with such.
Small Fonts
Still related to the two mentioned above is the use of tiny text. Black hat practitioners put stuffed keywords in small fonts, so as not to be noticeable by the average human reader.
Again, search engines have already devised ways to combat this. Some reject or penalize webpages that use frequently tiny font sizes.
Redirection
Some people will create a white hat-optimized page and then code it to redirect users to another page which usually just contains spam. Search engines now reject pages with unbelievably fast meta refresh rates.
Page Stuffing
Black hat SEO users may also use page stuffing. They create duplicates of a high-ranking webpage and submit them to be indexed. Thus, they dominate the results by pushing out the competition.
There are many other black hat SEO techniques out there and you're better off avoiding them. For SEO success, you should stick to white hat.
