SEO or search engine optimization is one of your biggest friends in creating a presence for your website. Through SEO, search engines can easily find your webpages. Consequently, they can present it to human users who need your site. With the internet the way it is today, SEO is a must for almost any website.

Content Matters

The thing that matters most in SEO is content. More than building for search engine crawlers, you should develop for a human audience first.

Why is this so? That's because high quality content would already win you half the battle. If your SEO efforts brought you to the top of results but users don't perceive the usefulness of the content of your webpage, they'll just end up leaving without doing anything. They might even pass on to other people that your site is spam and should be avoided – something you definitely do not want. Moreover, your SEO efforts would be in vain since as people leave your site, your rankings will eventually drop.

A Good Philosophy

Once you get a grasp of the importance of content, you can proceed with carrying out SEO techniques.

A good philosophy to go with in SEO is chasing quality over quantity. You'll still need to reach certain numbers in different aspects, but major search engines will reward you better if each of those numbers is meaningful.

Selecting Keywords

Choosing keywords would be your first step in the SEO process. You can find keyword analysis tools online to help you decide. How does "quality over quantity" play in selecting keywords? Basically, it would be in the search volume. Single-word terms have heavy search volume. However, that search volume may not be of quality to you. Searches involving such keywords are usually only looking for information. SEO experts don't recommend them. Action keywords and long-tail keywords will have lower search volume, but they are of good quality since human users who use such keywords have an intention of actually doing something. For example, "dogs" might have a good deal of search volume. However, "buy Siberian husky puppies" and "how to take care of pitbulls" are better targets.

Placing Keywords

Once you are done selecting keywords, you now have to think about how to place them on your pages. This is part of on-site SEO. Search engines check out every single word on your pages. This is to narrow down the results to sites that contain the keyword on the human user's query.

Again, SEO is more about quality. Search engines will actually penalize your page if there are a lot of keywords. You can achieve quality with your keywords by placing them in the right areas. Examples of good areas are the first sentence in the body of your page, headers, title, and description.

Building Links

The other part of SEO is building links. This is another aspect called off-site SEO. The more inbound links you get from external sites, the higher your ranking would be.

Quality over quantity still applies here. Your SEO efforts are better off directed towards getting links from reputable sites. Strive also to get links from sites that have topics related to yours.
