For any website, SEO has steadily been gaining significance. Search engines are the premier bringer of organic traffic, and there's a good reason to aim for organic traffic.
Advertisements and promotions can work but they can get expensive and most people get irritated with them. Just look at the popularity of a certain ad blocking plugin for internet browsers. Well, ask yourself: when you search for something on Google, do you even pay attention to the paid section of the search results?
What you want to target is the section right after that paid section. That's what people pay attention to. That's the place that, in most cases, attracts the greatest click-through rates.
To get to that coveted place, you will have to do SEO or Search Engine Optimization. Basically, SEO means making tweaks to your website's pages so that they can be easily read and found by search engines when certain terms, called keywords, are typed in the search box.
These keywords serve as the starting point of SEO efforts. You cannot proceed with SEO without selecting keywords first. It's actually not hard to figure out what keywords you want. You know what your site is about. You'd probably already have a certain word that popped in your mind. The tricky part is figuring out whether it would be beneficial for you to target that term for your SEO efforts.
What does that mean? Well, let's say your site is selling shoes. So, the first term that might come to mind is "shoes." You want your site to appear at the top when people type "shoes" in the search box. The thing about single-term keywords like this is that the competition is already high. The chances for success are low. Moreover, people using such a term for searching are probably not looking to buy shoes; they're probably just looking for information. Even if you do get at the top, you're not going to get a lot of transactions.
So, in SEO, you would be better off targeting long-tail keywords – four words or longer. Instead of "shoes," go for "buy men's leather shoes" or "compare women's jogging shoes." The competition is less, and the people searching through the use of such terms are likely to make a transaction.
If you're still not confident about the keywords for your site's SEO, there are many keyword analysis tools out there that you can use to gauge competition and find user statistics in order to better select target keywords.
Once you have decided on the keywords, you can now proceed with the next phase of SEO. There are two types of SEO, namely, on-site SEO and off-site SEO.
On-site SEO is all about placement of your keywords on your webpages and the structure of your site. You must put your keywords in the page title, headings, subheadings, and scattered appropriately throughout the site. Just be careful not to stuff keywords.
Off-site SEO is about links. When other sites that have good reputation on search engines link to your site, you'll increase your site's ranking.
