Biking is fun for everyone! Not only is it a wonderful way to get around, it can provide you with your daily dose of exercise and keep you healthy. It helps to build up the muscles throughout the whole body, especially the arms. legs and back. While bikes have principally been solely a means of transport for a while now, that is no longer the case. Bikes can also add adventure to your day and are now the principle greener way to travel keeping the air cleaner when compared to that of motorised transport.
But lets go right back to the begining where you first learn how to ride your first bike or to be more accurate learning how to ride your fist balance bike. Kids around the age of three have sufficient control over their bodies and specifically their balance to take to the road on two wheels.
Initially your kids may find this experience a little daunting, some kids will be looking forward to this day so they can join their brothers, sisters or friends riding on two wheels. Others could possibly be so scared of this moment that they need the additional peace of mind of using two additional side wheels or stabilisers to help keep them upright until they have mastered the art of riding on two wheels.
I can still remember learning to ride my first bike initially using stabilisers, but not for long, I was impatient and wanted them off as soon as possible. Yeah I fell off a few times but I leaned in our yard and first rode on grass so it wasn't too bad. Then once I had the hang of riding on two wheels I was off, down the street and the local lanes.
I remember a time when I was out with my dad riding my first small balance bike, I was still a little wobbly but my confidence was growing and I constantly pushed the boundaries riding faster and faster until this one time when for some unknown reason I lost control and rode right into a guy who was stood to the side of a path. Ouch I can still recall the pain as I crashed forwards right into the handle bars with my groin. The guy I hit also suffered a sore leg as a result of our collision, but he was okay about it and I don't think he held a grudge. That aside, learning to ride was just the begining of many an adventure all the way through to adult life.
Buying a bike for your child requires some considerations. Obviously how old your kid is is important as you don't want to put them in harms way too soon. They need to be big enough to fit the bike you buy it's no good thinking that they will grow into it! Buying one too small and it will only be a matter of months before you need to buy another. Ideally you need to take your kid to a store so that you can try a few bikes to see what works best, what looks right and to find one that your kid is going to be comfortable on.
Bike sizes are classified via the size of the wheel. There are recommended wheel sizes for all age groups. So when purchasing a bike for your child, pick the bike with the correct wheel size of 12 or 14 inches. Make sure your kids legs reach the floor. This alone will give your child more self confidence. Also make sure you purchase a pair of detachable side wheels for training her so she can learn to balance, they won't need them for long and they are usually universal so they can easily be used again on another bike.
Another important thing to keep in mind is to purchase a bike that is light in weight. Since you toddler is learning to ride, chances are she might fall a few times. And a heavy bike will worsen the experience. So while it is a bit more expensive, it is worth the investment.
Please Don't Forget! While you are at it, purchase a bike helmet!
It could be a good idea to get to know what it is your child is looking for. However be a little careful, kids might want the world, but if you are working with a budget. make sure your child is aware of this.
Once you have found the right bike and you know the make, size and colors then you can search online to find the best deals. Remember they are often delivered free, but you can still save money even if you do have to pay a delivery charge.
Once you have received the bike, get it out and give it the once over and make sure everything works because their is no bigger dissapointment than to receive a gift only to find that you can not use it because something doesn't work right. In fact, if it is a gift it is always a good thing to get it out of the packaging and to build it up so that it can be used straight away.
