There are long-lived people who maintain their health well into the 90s and beyond. What makes them unique is not due to some magic genes.
Arthritis, Alzheimer's, cancer and heat disease are considered by many to be the inevitable result of growing old. But many of these ailments are due to living a lifestyle that promotes pain and disease as we grow older.
The media, of course, hypes the energy of youth. Smooth skin and blemish free faces and figures grace the covers of fashion magazines and television advertising. Doctors stand ready to prescribe the latest medicines to soothe those daily aches and pains. A team of surgeons stand ready to perform plastic surgery and liposuction treatments. People spend millions for lotions, creams and salves to forestall the aging process.
Growing old is inevitable. Disease and pain can be prevented. There are factors that will accelerate the aging process. If you know what they are, you can live a pain-free life and maintain the energy of youth.
The Diet
Our ancestors stayed healthy by eating a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains with little meat. Today's diet consists of highly processed food along with chemicals the body is unable to process. High carbohydrate foods come cheaper than vegetables, but their effects lead many down the road to diabetes and heart disease. As more nations adopt the North American diet, disease strikes more and shortens lifespans.
Lack of Activity
The human body is meant to be active. A life spent on the sofa or in an office chair promote fatigue as cholesterol clog the veins. The heart is a muscle that needs exercise to strengthen it. Regular exercise does not have to turn into a sweaty workout to benefit. A 20 minute walk every day can keep the body healthy.
Environmental Pollutants
Today's environment is filled with toxins. From the chemicals and additives found in food to the pollutants in the air you breathe, toxins can disrupt the proper functioning of the body. The body's natural processes are disrupted and can not eliminate the viruses and germs when it must also handle the cleansing of foreign chemicals, some of which comes with prescribed medications. The bad habits of smoking and drinking only add to the toxic overload the body must deal with.
A Stressed Lifestyle
High blood pressure rises with age, but it doesn't need to affect the elderly. In today's economic climate, so many live under worry, fear and anxiety and find little in life to be joyous about. Depression and mental illness are on the rise as more people find no purpose to life other than collecting a salary. A lack of sleep leads to weight gain and a suppressed immune system. A weakened body is vulnerable to the viruses and bacteria that invade it on a daily basis. Few people know what it means to relax completely. Those who engage in yoga and meditation are often healthier and happier than those who rush through life pursuing an ideal they can not reach.
What most people do not realize is that they can make a change to their way of life. No one is forced to eat unhealthy food or chained to an office desk. Pain and disease do not have to be the result of age. No matter what your age may be, you can take steps to insure that life can be lived. Disease and illness can be avoided just as it is with the centenarians of Okinawa.
