Mechanic attrition is a growing problem that will eventually lead to many of the cars on the roads operating in unsafe conditions - If they are able to drive at all.
Yes, you may not have any trouble finding a mechanic or a place to repair your car now, BUT that does not mean this 'train wreck' approaching is not going to come true.
Currently these very highly skilled individuals are literally seeing their compensation erode from many factors, and the older generation mechanics are retiring. Many are leaving because they can not support their families in this profession and the new recruits are leaving within a two year period of joining the profession as they see the problem from the inside.
Here is why these new recruits leave. These new recruits typically go through some formal training at places like UEI, where the training requires a year or more and an education bill in excess of $20,000. They do this because recruiters at companies like this fill them with false promises of yearly incomes of mid 5 and low 6 figures within a few years of joining. Which is not correct according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Upon completing this education they are required by many employers to have a $15,000 tool inventory, which does not include scan tools or specialty diagnostic tools. This amount does not buy many tools especially when those tools are purchased from companies like Snap-On tools.
So these new recruits have a career investment total of $35,000 of debt which is accumulating interest daily. They are typically offered a starting position of GS or D mechanic with a pay rate of minimum wage or slightly better for a period of 90 days to 6 months. Then they are switched to flat rate which is pay based upon production at rates of typically $11 per flat rate hour to them, when shops are charging customers $80 and up per hour for their services.
Then after a year or two they leave, with all this debt and totally disillusioned with the automotive industry.
It is difficult for most people to understand the structure of mechanic pay without actual numbers in front of them, so here goes. For the sake of discussion, we'll say your car needs some service and this service is going to cost $500. This includes the parts, labor, shop supplies, taxes, HazMat fees, well everything.
Years ago the break down of this charge was typically 50% for parts and 50% for labor, or about $250 for each. With the increased cost of quality parts that has become skewed to about $300 to $325 parts, taxes and other fees take another chunk -- so the labor charge that the mechanic shares is about $100 to $150.
The mechanic who diagnosed the car and typically received nothing for that testing gets between $20 and $30 of the labor charges. He invested an hour of diagnostic time, then 1.2 hours of repair labor or 2.2 hours total for something slightly better than minimum wage per hour. And he has all these costs to cover from that small amount.
