It is important that you know a thing or two about leather care. Leathers are natural materials that come from hides of several animals. For leather car seats, they are tanned so they do not wear out easily. However, various elements tend to diminish the tanning of these leathers. You would easily see that not-cared-for leathers would show hardening, cracking, and drying.
Leathers have pores because this is how the animals maintain their fluid balance. Once their hide becomes your leather seat, the pores become a passageway into which moisture can come in and out. Inside the leather are fibers that maintain the upholstery's strength and you should take note that the leather's worst enemies are dirt, water, heat, and salt.
Now that you know the strengths and weaknesses of leather, it is now time for leather care 101.
First thing you need to do is remove all dirt and grime. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush tip. check that you clean out all the cracks and crevices because these grimes can easily clog the pores. When that happens, the moisture cannot go out and your cleaners cannot go through the insides of the leather.
Once you have cleared out all the dirt, you need to apply a leather cleaner. Remember that your cleaner must be able to remove stains and markings without spoiling your leather. To prevent darkening of your leather, do not use cleaners with wax formulations. Cleaners made with natural ingredients, not chemicals, work best.
Be careful not to miss the molds, changes in humidity plus moisture contribute to molds. When you see green spores, clean them immediately before they spread out. Make sure they were not able to invade the core of your car seat. Molds are a factor to the weakening of the leather fiber.
Once you are done with the cleaner, double check that you have removed all the cleaner, otherwise it can cause leather to harden.
If your leather cleaner does not have a conditioner in it, you will need to apply a conditioner to maintain the natural moisture of your leather seats. Use a soft sponge so you avoid scratches because conditioning needs to be done thoroughly.
One more additional tip: if there will be times that you would use your car and you are all sweaty, make sure to wipe the leather immediately because the salt from sweat will also damage the leather.
Leather care has only two essential steps: cleaning and conditioning. If would be able to do these on a regular basis, you can be sure that your leather car seats will be in great shape as if they are new. You do not have to do it everyday; once a week is acceptable because too much cleaning may also ruin the quality of the leather. BooYah Clean! makes a Leather Cleaner & Conditioner that does the job in one easy step. To find out more, visit their website.
