If there is one key component that all successful small business owners stress, it is the importance of personal development. Working on yourself first is important to your success. If you do not grow, your business will not grow.
Most people have blueprints set up in their subconscious mind that decide their ingrained ideals about money, relationships, society, etc. They are shaped from what we have seen, heard, and experienced – mostly as we were growing up. Those blueprints have more of an effect on our results than most people realize.
Most of us do not have financial blueprints conducive to becoming wealthy, successful small business owners. In many ways, we have to unlearn what we have learned and remake our financial blueprints.
Okay, so we know we need to work on personal development. But what exactly does that entail? Here are some important steps to follow:
1) Have a clear image as to where you are going. You might be asking, what does that have to do with personal development? Everything! You need to know where you want to go before you leave. You many not know how you will get there yet, but you need to know your destination! What is your goal? Why is that your goal? These need to be plain in your mind.
2) Write down or type out that ambition. This is not going to be a one or two sentence blurb. This is going to be a very thorough, spelled-out description of where you want to go. It is written in the present tense – as though you have already accomplished it. How does it look? What does it feel like? What do you see or hear? What are you experiencing? What is the date? What time of day is it? Where are you? Incorporate all five senses in your narrative.
3) Hang this typed or written objective up on your wall where you will see it every day. Read it out loud twice per day.
4) Read personal development books every day for a minimum of 30 minutes per day. There are so many books to choose from! Some popular ones are Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker, and Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki just to name a few.
5) Listen to personal development audios every day. Listen to successful entrepreneurs who have already achieved what you want to accomplish. You need to nourish your mind with skill and understanding from those who are where you want to be, not from those who are broke and struggling! Tony Robbins, Bob Proctor, and T. Harv Eker are good examples with which to start.
6) Associate with successful people. Part of this is done by following steps 4 and 5. But you also want to actually spend time with them in person. Whether that is going to conferences, courses, events for a company, joining local groups...just being around successful entrepreneurs will help you to be more successful. It will make everything more tangible to you. You'll see that those entrepreneurs are not super heroes. They are not any better than you. They're entrepreneurs who refused to be average. Be open! Absorb what they say, what they do, and how they act like a sponge!
7) Keep away from negativity. This is really important! Do whatever you can to stay away from negative, whining individuals. They will bring you down. Do not let them rob you of your dreams! Some individuals are not satisfied unless they bring all around them down to their level. So they go and try to spread their pessimism like a cancer. Close them out of your life, if at all possible. If that person is a family member – especially one who lives with you – do what you can to ignore them. Negativity will stop momentum in your personal development faster than just about anything. Do not engross yourself in the news, because the only news is bad news! You know what they say...garbage in, garbage out.
