Metallica was created way back in 1981 in California by Lars Ulrich who played the drums and James Hetfield was their lead vocalist as well as played guitar. These guys recorded their very first demo album, No Life Til' Leather, along with Lloyd Grand played guitar, and was eventually replaced in January 1982 by Dave Mustaine. At the end of 1982, Cliff Burton who played bass teamed up with the group. Dave Mustaine was forced out of the band and he went on to create Megadeth and was replaced by Kirk Hammett.
Metallica's first and initial record Kill 'em All in 1983 is undoubtedly a testament to the true originations of the sub-genre of heavy metal music referred to as thrash metal. When you look back on the thrash metal scene which was going on then, there may have been a few other groups that were actually more conclusive of thrash metal music such as Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Iron Maiden. That being said, the one record that most everyone seems to recall the most is Kill 'em All.
Not long after the success of their first album Kill 'em All, Metallica stormed back in 1984 with Ride the Lightning. I have always looked at this as being another excellent record with flat-out more effective production compared to the first record that they produced. It turns a little bit more on traditional heavy metal side rather than thrash metal. That being said I myself would prefer more thrash metal, however to each his own.
The next time Metallica returned with an album it was Master of Puppets in 1986 and it is frequently believed to be amongst the best metal records ever produced. There honestly isn't one bad song on this entire record. If I had to choose one favorite song though it would certainly be "Leper Messiah". Later these guys recorded "And Justice for All" in 1988 that is among their more refined records ever when it comes to technique.
With the commercial achievements of their next record in 1991 (Metallica) which is also referred to as the Black album, Metallica began to get more and more away from their initial heavy metal sound. Since that time their level of popularity has slowly declined. Even so their early work as well as their first 5 or 6 records will be recognized as a number of the best metal records ever produced.
