Buddhist Gifts
We can all relate when it comes to struggling to by a friend or family member a gift. Some people like shoes, some love plants and gardening, and others love that special chocolate that can only be found online.
But what do you get that special person on your list that is a Buddhist? And what does being a Buddhist even mean?
Buddhism is an ancient religious practice that was started in the 6th century. Although some state that it is not a "true" religion due to its lack of God focus, it is widely practiced throughout the Indian areas of the world, including Central, East and Southeast Asia.
The practice of Buddhism is fairly simple in that the belief involves changing yourself – a spiritual life is gained by seeking, and finding, enlightenment. Because Buddhism is fairly straightforward it is easily adopted by anyone; it's teachings give people a path to transform their lives.
So how do you buy gifts for someone that is a believer in the Buddhist traditions?
There are many gift options for someone that is a practicing Buddhist; this religion focuses on meditation, peace, enlightenment and inner focus. Gifts that symbolize the practice and art of this process would be a good choice. Although a Buddhist typically does not need a gift to find enlightenment, the symbols of the gifts are often what is noticed and appreciated.
Some of these items may include Buddha statues and symbols. There are many different choices, including small statues appropriate for a shelf or a small home alter, to garden or outdoor meditation room sizes. Another symbol that would be appropriate for a small home alter would be the stupa, which represents enlightenment. It is considered one of the most sacred monuments of the Buddhist culture.
A mala, which is a set of beads used during meditation, is another gift choice. This string of beads made of a wide variety of seeds and woods, has 108 beads, plus one more for the guru. A practitioner of Buddhism believes that using these beads during meditation allows for them to better focus on the mantra that is being chanted.
A particularly special gift, especially for a wedding couple, is the prayer scarf. This white scarf, called a khata, is often given to special people and symbolizes the start of a positive relationship. The khata can be given to someone as they leave on a trip, or to honor someone. This scarf symbolizes both purity and compassion and is traditionally white to symbolize the honorable intention of the person giving the scarf.
One of the simplest gifts that you can give to a Buddhist is a book on Buddhism. There are so many choices on the teachings and meditation practices that it is an almost limitless gift-giving pool. Small purse sized books of meditation and prayer; larger books for display, or practical books of teachings and religious discussion are just a few of the book choices that could be given.
Although the gifts can be varied, there is a simple tenet to follow when giving someone that is a Buddhist a gift - if a gift exudes calmness and tranquility, focuses on peace and wellness, and brings a sense of focus to an individual, it can become a part of a Buddhists life. Buddhism is the practice of finding enlightenment; a gift that allows the recipient to focus on their beliefs will be appreciated. Although a true Buddhist needs no gifts to be enlightened, a gift on the path to enlightenment would be well received when it brings with it peace and light.
