For anyone who has their own bundle of joy, having and using baby strollers is one of the many subtle, convenient, and enjoyable aspects of parenthood.
Whether it is a quiet stroll at the park, a busy day at a shopping mall, or just plain walking around, it's just right that any mom and dad would like their babies to feel warm, snug, and especially safe. Carrying an infant with one's loving arms is the typical way to provide these vital things, but even with any undying love, parents get physically tired too. And when the time comes that both parents and baby would like to take a rest, but are far away from the likes of a crib, a stroller comes very handy.
There are several types of strollers, some are designed for a specific purpose or age group, but all of them have features that are found in any stroller design, and those are a basket, wheels, and handles.
The most common type is the pram stroller or buggy. Prams have a canopied basket with a cushioned bottom and sides that a baby can sleep safe and comfortably in. Most prams also have four wheels like in a cart, providing better safety and stability.
Prams are great for newborns or younger babies that often sleep or can't walk yet. Prams can be considered as the general or casual stroller. They are lightweight, easy to use, and don't have many parts and accessories.
Umbrella strollers are also lightweight strollers. These strollers have an inclined basket that lets a baby sit facing forward. Most have a set of 4 wheels and don't have many features. Like the pram, they are great as everyday strollers and are meant for older babies from one year old and up.
Another type of stroller is the jogging stroller. This stroller is meant for occasions where a parent wants to jog or walk for exercise, but otherwise cannot leave their baby behind at home or someplace. The minimum age for a jogging stroller is six months and the maximum age is up to three years old.
Most jogging strollers have three wheels (although some have four). There is one wheel at the front which is connected to the handles, and two wheels at the back, like in a trike. The purpose of this design is to enable the stroller to turn easily at faster speeds, like in the case of jogging or running. Also, the basket of a jogging stroller is deep and inclined forward to let a baby sit in an upright position, similar to that of an infant car seat. This feature can give the baby the thrill of experiencing speed, but also in safety.
A double stroller can either be a pram, umbrella, or jogging stroller that has baskets or seats for two babies, hence the term "double". Double strollers are ideal for carrying twins or babies of the same age. Some strollers can even carry a higher number of babies and as such can be triple, quad, and quintuplet strollers.
