Today's baby strollers provide safety, comfort, functionality, and different types to choose from. It has not always been the case for people back in the day where they have to come up with resourceful methods of carrying their children over vast or short distances. Where did the need for strollers all begin?
It started with animal drawn baby carriages of William Kent in the 1700s for the Duke of Devonshire. Kent's carriages were baskets usually made of wood and wicker, with springs for comfort; he also added handles so people can pull it from behind. In the early 1800s, father and son, Benjamin and Jesse Crandall were the first to manufacture and patent several models with a number of functions such as brakes and foldability.
During that era, owning a stroller became a status symbol. Most of the prams were heavily decorated and were named after famous people, such as kings and queens. Some of the four-wheeled prams at that time were considered as a vehicle and were banned from foot paths resulting to other models to have two or only three wheels. Later lawmakers decided to scrap the ban, seeing that strollers were no threat to public safety.
In the late 1800s, William Richardson produced and patented push prams with wheels that can move separately for easy maneuvering. At the end of World War I, the subsequent baby boom created demand for buggies with foot brakes made from plastic and rubber as a cheap alternative to brass parts. They replaced the tall frame with a deeper seat or cot, so that the baby won't fall off easily, increasing safety features in the production of prams at the time. During the Second World War, some baby carriages were made to be gas proof in fear of chemical weapons at that time.
By the 20th century, Owen Maclaren constructed the modern day lightweight strollers that can easily be folded due to its aluminum frame. Many people used it because of its lightness and affordability. Phil Baecher created the jogging stroller with its distinct three-wheel design that provides maneuverability and stability during jogging. This stroller is more expensive than most lightweight models and is aimed towards parents who have physically active lifestyles. Other recent innovation were added suspension, and the introduction of carbon fiber and aluminum features.
The advent of a double stroller is fairly recent due to the high birthrate, where it convenient for parents with multiple children, but expensive than single unit models. The demand for faster and handier ways to take a baby from one different place to another, especially with a vehicle, resulted in travel system strollers (hence the name) that can easily be detached to fit in and out of the car. Some of these strollers offer additional accessories catering to alternative preference of consumers.
It is clear that strollers have a come a long way since its early times. From just a simple basket on wheels, to modular components that can be attached and detached. As human lifestyle changes, so too will strollers will continue to evolve for babies and parents.
