The Chinese calendar is a type of lunisolar system. It combines elements from the solar and lunar calendars. This is not exclusive to China, or its residents. In fact, it is used by many people who reside in Asian regions.
In most parts of East Asia, the Gregorian system is employed for day-to-day activities. However, when it comes to marking holidays and other special events, the Chinese system is consulted. The Duan Wu festival, Mid-Autumn festival and Chinese New Year are all based on this system. It is also used in astrology when it comes to selecting dates that are auspicious for building openings, weddings or similar special events. Every month follows the moon cycle and so it can be used to figure out the various phases of our moon.
The earliest evidence that this system existed are found in Shang Dynasty oracle bones, which are dated all the way back to the late second millennium BC. A year, in this system, begins with the second new moon following winter solstice, unless it is moved to a third new moon by an intercalary month. One day is from midnight to midnight, based on Chinese Standard Time.
The days are grouped in different kinds of weeks. There is the 10-day week which is known as the ten celestial stems. There is also the 12-day week, which is known as the 12 earthly branches. When it comes to the 60-day week, the 10-day system and the 12-day system are combined, becoming the 60-day week, also known as 60 stem-branches. Xingqi is the name given to the 7-day week, which are named after the planets.
When it comes to practicality, this system is able to be used for tracking the solar cycle, as it keeps pace with it. It retains months that are correlated with the lunar cycles as well. This is considered essential because most traditional festivals and events correspond with important events in the moon cycle.
More recently, experts in China have called for reform. They maintain that the calendar has only increased in its irrelevance over time. Its initial purpose and need for marking dates is no longer as relevant in the modern world. Furthermore, Gregorian systems are simpler to compute and go along better with the international standards.
There are many people around the globe who follow the Chinese calendar. This is considered an essential part of the culture in most Asian areas. In fact, it is tied to much cultural and nationalistic sentiment. Most people living in traditional Asian homes follow it, especially for planning dates for special events.
