Learning to work from home can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you're juggling a full time job, family, and household chores. Developing good time management skills will help you work more efficiently. Most importantly, time management will produce more quality work and minimize stress. Below are ten tips I found most helpful for good time management.
Set goals
Make a list and set deadlines for yourself. Seeing your goals on paper will help make you more accountable. Start and finish one task at a time. You can cross things off as you go along, showing how much you have accomplished. Your long term goal will be your reason for working so hard and will help you stay motivated.
Plan ahead
Failing to plan is planning to fail. Plan your work week in advance. I like to use a pocket calendar to record all of my weekly meetings, webinars, conference calls and anything else I need to schedule throughout the week. I can visualize what times I have available, and I don't double book anything. Calendars are also available on smartphones and tablets and can be linked to your other accounts, such as google. It may be useful to set an alarm if you have trouble remembering specific events or deadlines.
Timing is everything
Determine which part of the day you are most productive. Are you an early bird or a night owl? Tackle your most important duties when you have the most energy. Identify free time during your day, like early mornings and late evenings while everyone else is asleep, during kids' nap times, or during school hours. Choose tasks from your list that can be completed in these time frames, or use free time to get household chores out of the way.
Pencil it in
Determine how many hours you need to work each week and track your time. Set a specific work schedule, dedicating those hours to professional work only. Share your schedule with friends, family, and neighbors. Let them know that you will be unavailable during work hours. Keeping a consistent schedule will help you create routine and work more fluidly.
Become a creature of habit
Create a routine and system for all daily activities. Eliminate the decision of what to do and when. With a routine, actions will become more automated allowing you to work faster. Keep in mind; it may take time to find a system that works for you.
Earn a living
Figure out which tasks pay you and spend time on those tasks each day. The two most important needs in building your business are finding new customers to buy your products and new recruits to join your team. While building networks is important, don't waste too much time on activities that will not produce an income.
Avoid distractions
Turn off the television and silence the cell phone. Limit checking emails, as well as any social media sites, to once or twice a day. If you are having trouble concentrating, take a break. Give yourself some time to relax and refocus. Be sure to time your breaks and remember that doing chores is not a break!
Be an expert
To begin, select a marketing strategy that you are comfortable with. Learn as much as you can about that one strategy. You will be more successful putting 100% effort into one skill than putting 10% effort into ten skills. It only takes about 90 days to master a new skill. Be sure to fully master one strategy before moving on to the next.
Organization
Get organized! Create a quiet space dedicated to work. If you don't have a home office, a corner of the bedroom will work just as well. Keep your supplies neat and easily accessible. I like to use a three-ring binder for personal paperwork, tax information and catalogs. My supplies and client information are organized in fold and files under my desk. I know exactly where to find everything I need. Staying organized saves time and space.
Balance
It is important to have a good balance between work and family. It is easy to get caught up on deadlines and duties when working from home. We have to create boundaries that do not otherwise exist. Don't forget to schedule time for play during your day too, especially if you have little ones at home. When it is time for play, give your family your undivided attention. The kids will be more willing to play independently during work time if they don't feel like they are being ignored. After all, the ability to spend more time with family is why most of us choose to work from home.
Good time management in a work from home environment means completing more work in less time. We all need more hours in the day! Work more efficiently and recognize how much you really do accomplish in a day.
