Epson printer cartridges are a component of an inkjet printer. It's a replaceable container that is filled with ink which is used for printing. There are two types of cartridges; one contains black Epson ink and the other one contains the 3 primary colours. However, in some cases each colour can be contained in its own cartridge. Some cartridges contain special ink that prints photographs while others, the most common ones, contain ink for printing of texts.
When the Epson ink inside the cartridge is completely finished, the cartridge can be refilled with ink rather than buying a new one. Most suppliers of printers and their accessories supply them with refilling kits. Users can therefore refill their cartridges with ink on their own. The only thing required is ink.
The most recent and probably the most advanced model of Epson printer cartridges is called Continuous Ink Supply System and is abbreviated as CISS. It consists of an Epson ink reservoir located outside the printer from which ink is drawn and transported into the printer by use of tubes. The reservoir is partitioned according to the colour of ink.
Depending on the make of the Epson printer cartridges, the ink can be refilled by either direct injection into the cartridge or into the ink reservoir located outside the printer. The common simple cartridges have holes on top, those are the areas where ink should be injected. The ink is injected inside the cartridge using a needle and syringe. The process should be slow and careful to avoid damaging the cartridge
Printers are designed in such a way as to facilitate the removal and insertion of Epson printer cartridges. Normally, the cartridges are held in place by clips which can easily be adjusted. To remove them you simply have to lift the clip and unplug them. However, extra precaution should be taken because the Epson ink in the tiny openings tends to dry and clog them. It is therefore important that they get carefully covered with a material that can prevent the ink from drying. In case the ink dries in the printing openings, then it should be unblocked by use of a special type of spirit called isopropyl-alcohol. A soft towel should be dipped into the solution and then carefully be used to wipe the metallic printing-head.
After refilling, the Epson printer cartridges can then be inserted back into the printer and be clipped into position. If the Epson ink has been prevented from reaching to the bottom then it has to be forced by pressure. A syringe can be used to increase the pressure inside the cartridge or a suction force can be applied on the cartridge to pull the ink to the bottom. Alternatively, the cartridge can be unblocked by dipping it in shallow warm water in the glass for a few hours. When handling the cartridge, avoid touching the metallic part because you may end up clogging it.
This component of the printer is probably the most cost effective part that doesn't require to be replaced. It also helps to conserve the environment. Usage of the ink can also be controlled and minimized by the computer.
