Now and again I get asked a question which is worth exploring in more depth. This happened only this week and as I promised on Facebook let's spend a few minutes exploring it together here ... "Hey Phillip before I join with you in your primary business can you explain why so many people seem to join this industry and never get started or do anything. Why do some people drop out without even realizing what it's all about.".
Well to me the answer to that question is obvious but before we get to it let's see if we can frame the question a little better ... I sometimes find this helps and it's a little tip I reccommend you try out for yourself ..."Hey Phillip I just want to check that your team has systems and procedures in place that help to train and mentor new people coming into your team during the first few crucial months. Because if you do then it will mean that this industries biggest problem, lack of understanding has bean addressed in your organization and there will be no excuses if people never get started or do anything. I need a better training regime than my last team offered to stop people leaving without ever realizing what they joined in the first place.".
You see I really have to tell you how annoyed I get when I hear people say things like "Oh it's a numbers game", "The more No's you get the closer you are to a Yes", "20 % of the people will do 80 % of the work"... now that ones will get its own blog entry. !! Yes you will get people who are not interested, yes you will get more No's than Yes's and that is a good thing. Why? Because if it was easy our company either would not pay us as much or wouldn't even need us in the first place.
... It's not a numbers game, people are people not numbers, it's a people game ... real live people with feelings and emotions, dreams, goals and ambitions. Now if you treat them like numbers and you expect at least 80 % to say no to you then guess what? Yep you will get a no at least 80 % of the time. Now I contend it's not a numbers game at all. Unlike gambling this is a Skill's game. It's the person with the right skills, not the one who plays the most numbers that will enjoy the greatest success in Network Marketing ... And Guess what, It's always been that way. !!
You see the people refered to in the question who never really get started and drop out? Well that is pure lack of understanding, a lack of knowledge, a lack of the right Skill set ... on the part of the Sponsor. !! Yes the Sponsor. you see before you bring anyone into this business you really should know what their Wants and needs are for getting into the business in the first place, and of equal importance ... what they don't want or need. You need to find out what people want to buy before you try and sell them on anything.
It's your responsibilty to not only find out their "Why" but to help them develop it, help them make it more real, get them to work on their Why so every time they get a set back they can think of their Why and they just have to keep moving forward to success because their Why wont let them fail. Their Why is strong enough to make them cry. It is your responsibility to get the right Skills to help you to achieve that. Then you are the CEO of your own business, if you are in Network Marketing. If you fail don't go looking for others to blame. It's down to you. Don't go blaming the Industry which has created more personal wealth than any other Industry in history. It's down to you.!
You are the Sponsor and if you don't yet have the right skill set to help mentor and train this newbie then that is not a problem, but you need to go upline until you find someone who does have the right skill set to help. If you have tried your sponsor and all you get is "It's a numbers game just keep doing what your doing until you get a yes" (or similar) Then just go further upline until you find someone with the right Skills to help and assist you.
If you can't find one then guess what ... It's your turn to claim the role of developing the right skills and mindset to become that Leader in your team, you cn do it ... If you want to. It is after all not only your responsibility to yourself to gather the right Skill Set to help the people you sponsor but its your duty to ensure your success in this Industry.
I like to look at it this way ... Do not enter this industry if your focus is on making lots of money, you will not make the money you will only hurt people, and the Industry. Please enter this industry if you can focus on helping other people to help themselves.
So go learn some skills, go help some people. and the next time you are thinking of joining anyone in businessask them what systems, tools and training they have in place to ensure that their people learn all the skills they need to ensure success ... trust me, that is more important than the products, the managemant, the comp and the company plan ... it's all about the skills.!
